Even if I was just to put 2 x 250Gb drives in, that would be fine, knowing that it was all going to be backed up would be GREAT!!!

no complaints for a Lacie d2 250Gb triple interface, which i've had for almost two years, and a maxtor 300gb triple interface, though i've only had that for 4 months.

if you're moving big video files i'd assume you want fw800 at least

I'm using a Macbook, so I only have Firewire 400, which will have to be fast enough!

yeah, . tough one. at least get a raid 0,1 enclosure. raid 0 will stripe across 2 volumes, .. pointless. raid 1 will mirror data onto a second drive, .. much better. these units also have auto rebuild features.... this will do for you. yep, raid 5 units are pretty pricey. firewire 400 will be good enough

So, what encloure would you recommend, and Hard Drives, I think I'll go with RAID 1, 2 mirrored drives.

I was looking at Samsung SATA 2 Hard Drives.

Thanks

William

look at this product...

http://www.raidon.com.tw/sohoraid%20sr3600.htm

most raid units come with FW 800 & usb 2.

the unit i use came with a firewire 800 to 400(6 pin) cable & thankfully it did since i also use a Macbook pro which for some dumb reason doesn't have fw 800

That looks expensive, how much did you pay for it?

Also what drives do you use?

Yeah, thats well above my budget, as I only have about $400, for the whole lot (drives included), I might just have to go with a standard External Drive and hope for the best, or is there a way that I can get 2 x say 320Gb Firewire Drives and just get one to mirror the other?

That might be the only way I could do it.

i'm just guessing on pricing. shop around a little, .. there are many similar products available. use this as a comparison when speaking to suppliers.

good luck!

MyBook 500gb drive crashing- twice so far I have had it unable to mount on my iMac. Tried it in another Mac and with same result.

Disk utilities found it but could not repair errors. Works after reformat.

It's only job now is to record tv as I have no faith in it. It will be going back next time it happens though.

The dual drive enclosure you put up seems like a winner, or even a miniG (look it up). I'm pretty sure you can put in one drive and use it - so you can expand later when you have the cash.

When working with HDV you will come across two stalling points - if you are using the native HDV the bigger your project gets the slower things will run due to CPU required to decode the files. However, if using Apple Intermediate CODEC, prepare for far bigger filesizes, which if you want to run multiple streams may or will require a RAID. ::edit:: I should have mentioned the XP800 'Taurus' allows for one drive to be installed and another drive later - this page has it cheaper also http://www.epowermac.com.au/product.asp?P_ID=589

I'd suggest going with Samsung drives - in my experience they've been quieter and MUCH cooler than Seagates, although Seagate HDDs are super reliable also.

Hi,

Thanks for all the help! I was looking closer at that drive, it dosen't seem to offer raid one, but it says it offer JBOD which allows two seperate volumes. Would I be able to put in two drives and then just manually or using something superduper, duplicate the main drive to the other one in the encloure?

Thanks

William

I had a look at the MiniG, it looks nice, but I can't seem to find any Australian Stockists.
