Definitely Canon. I'm another happy MP500 owner. The 500 series doesn't have a fax, whereas the 800 series usually does.

You can buy a more compact HP, but ultimately the Canon will be cheaper to run unless you buy a HP 4x6 photo printing kit.

Canon here also.

Newer models have film negative scanning and some have duplex printing.

Go brother dude.

Best Mac OS X support - they have faithfully updated their drivers for every update of mac os x. The scanning driver is TWAIN compliant. Most of their models also support Bonjour.

There's nothing wrong with Canon, but their mac os x support has been patchy in the past.

Definitely Canon

I recently bought the 830

I didn't need or really want a fax - but when I compared several of their models...
I ended up with one that has a fax... and the irony is I'd used it four times as a fax already!

I wanted a good quality printer
good quality scanner
duplex printing
oh and this 830 has very nice duplex scanning and copying as well!

I have a few other mates on Mac's that all use Canon as well with no problems at all.

Another factor you might like to consider - is the ink cartridges (both the number of them in each machine and the cost to replace them!)

Officeworks currently has a $100 saving on a HP Photosmart C4180.

So: was $199, now $99 until Wednesday.

I bought one last Wednesday.

It's just so sensational-quiet than my old 3550, prints beautiful photos that are smudge proof and fade proof-using VIVERA inks.

Up to 30 CPM/PPM black, 24PPM colour for copies and printers.

Has a 4x6 cassette-slides neatly into the side and is used for printing too.

HP Photosmart Express UI-makes printing a lot easier.

Drivers are UB-and the supplied software is as well.

Consumables are $39.95 at BIGW-or a bit less, if you refill. Plus, they are not as small as Canon-and have more ink in them (I stayed away from Canon since 2004).

Can be shared easily.
Comes with some amazing OCR-based on ReadIRIS and Photosmart Premier is lot like iPhoto-but you can print locally with Snapfish.com.au.

Scanner is:2400 x 4800 dpi with 48-bit colour and emits a green colour during scanning-nice touch.
Scanner works perfectly on OSX.

Prints pages:fastest setting-25secs

I have always bought Epson multifunctions, and have found them to always be top-notch and fairly affordable, with all the features you want and none of the dodgy stuff.

Last month i got the Epson Stylus CX5900, and i love it. As far as Mac compatibility goes, i haven't found any problems at all, it all works brilliantly, Epson even includes a CD full of Mac-compatible software (image editing etc.). The inks are also quite affordable and seem to go quite a long way for the price!

No, it doesn't seem to be, but it doesn't really matter to me because:
a) I only own PPC machines.
b) Most of the software is useless compared to OSX's own offerings (Image Capture, iPhoto) and Photoshop.

Most people would never use this gimmicky software, so it doesn't really have that much to do with the evaluation of the product. It's just nice that it is there.
