External display question.

I have bought a samsung lcd tv and have plugged it into my imac (MiniDVI -> DVI Adapter -> DVI to HDMI cable). The tv is capable of 1366 X 768, however i cannot select this resolution in the display settings screen. Is there a way to run this lcd in its native resolution or do I have to go with something else that OS X will let me use?

1366 X 768 is not a standard resolution, so it's not in OSX's list of known modes. I don't think the iMac's GPU is even capable of that resolution, even if you were to patch the relevant framework to allow it.

SwitchResX allows you to set custom resolutions for stuff like this:

... it's also very cheap if you decide to register it.

The mobility x1600 is capable of pushing 2560x1600 pixels, and doesn't care what the aspect ratio is - i can safely assume it can push 1366x768 easily without any real problems.

I have the same problem with my 21" CRT IBM P260. I can do 85hz in 1600x1200 in Windows but OSX only shows 60hz as the supported maximum.

I tried SwitchResX and that was rubbish.

DisplayConfigX doesn't let you go higher than a certain resolution in the trial version so I can't try that either.

I'm annoyed.

Most modern gaphics cards/drivers only natively support resolutions divisible by 8, so 1366/8=170.75 no joy. Some recent AMD cards aren't affected by this problem.

Also, if the displays EDID hasn't been programmed with the actual video modes the display is capable of (lots of TVs aren't) the the operating system won't offer them as available resolutions.

End result, it's very difficult to get a computer to properly connect to an HD TV.

Like Byrd said SwitchResX should help.
