New prices of Cinema Displays still too high?
Hey guys
I'm looking at the new prices of the cinema displays and is it just me, or are they still way too high?
Even, with the student discount they're quite a bit more expensive than, say, the equivalent dells. And I don't think that they're better per se.
More realisting prices would be, imo:
20" $600~$650
24" (why are they still selling the overpriced 23" model?): $1000~$1200
30" $3100~$3200
And, I think they need to start adding more modern features to their lcds so that they can compete. Like HDMI and component.
What are your opinions? Would you buy a mac LCD?
Daniel

People tell me the Apple LCDs are of higher quality than their counterparts, but you know what - for my naive eyes, I'd rather have a nice wad of cash in my pocket
If it was $150-200 more than the non-Apple screen, I'd go the Apple monitor, simply because it matches.
Apple is probably making a lot more money off their LCDs than Dell et. al. is so good luck to em I say ,haha

Yes i think they are really expensive.
I just bought an older style cinema display for my g5 with the ADC to DVi Converter all up i paid ALOT of money $180 for the adapter and $340 for the display ($520) but i mean i've always wanted to do this so it was indeed worth it.

Yeah. Dell had the 24" for under a grand today. Apple's like $400 more for 1" less. Sure the case is nicer and maybe the screen is better, but it doesn't have anywhere like the number of video inputs. ANd its doesn't go to portrait mode either. Plus for like $50 more you can extend the 3 year warranty to 5 years...with apple you get a year unless you buy it with another machine which you get Applecare.

Plus don't forget that Apple's engineers painstakingly chose that shade of aluminium so it would be the least distracting when using multiple displays.
What would the Hubs in them be worth?

I think the problem also lies in the conversion from US$ to AUD$
Through Edu Pricing:
20" $549 US = AUD$670
23" $799 US =AUD$976
30" $1599 US =AUD$1955
According to my conversion widget.
Whereas the Australian Edu Prices are:
20" $829 = $159 overpriced
23" $1249 = $273 overpriced
30" $2499 = $$544 overpriced
Now that is just silly!

I have had a Dell 20 inch screen for over a year now, great screen! Surprised I even considered an apple one, this is great! For (at the time at least) around $300 less if not a tad more!

Apple screens are really top quality. I have a 20" cinema display at work and a same size dell at home (same mac at both) the mac screen has better viewing angles and it looks way cooler. Plus with the usb hub the desk looks cleaner. And if you are buying it for a mac (Im sure most do) you dont need multiple connections. But hey dont ask me, I liked the old lampshade iMac design better than the pizza box one. dirk

But that would be a great explanation if Apple Aust were buying the gear from Apple US @ exactly the same prices as the consumer. Do you think that happens?
Or do they actually get a discount?
I think they get a discount - they buy in bulk don't they? Shipping costs aren't as extreme in bulk either.
As for the dollar exchange rate - nominally the price differentiation for Apple products hasn't changed since we were @ 70c or less against the US - now it's 81c. That's a big difference and that's the one difference I'd like explained.

Keep in mind that the panels are not of higher quality than the rest of the industry,
Apple uses displays from samsung and other OEM's just like everyone else, if you don't want to pay the extra for the touch sensitive buttons, usb and firewire hubs and the style buy a Dell.

They wouldn't even pay wholesale price, they are an Apple branch office and will get them at cost.
