Hi!

Im in the same router/modem/airport conundrum as disscused here

Ive tried everything i can think of but i cant get it to work. Essentially i can get the AE to recognise the network. Now whenever i try and connect to network 'x' or change a setting it asks for a password.

I have the password yet whenever i enter it it tells me ther is an error connecting to the network?! i am sure the password i right as my flatmate has the network and her dell laptop working flawlessly.

What am i doing wrong? I have the net working fine when i plug an ethernet cable in the mac but no wireless.

I am using a 2.0ghz powermac - modem is a seimens 4200 and the router is a lynksis. Any other details needed i can provide if anyone has any ideas?!?

many thanks

This probably doesn't contribute much - but you know I have not heard a single good thing about the Siemens Speedstream from Optus.

To make matters worse, I did some investigating and Siemens don't even support their own modem. If your ISP can't help you, you need to have your CC ready and get charged something obscene like $100 per 15 mins or part thereof...

Bad modems bad!

Full Bridge or NAPT will enable this to work.

I've found no issues with the 4200, syncs at a better speed than my Netgear, and much more stable. . .

Follow up to my post-
i recently ditched my Siemens modem after many airport connection and drop-out problems and replaced it with a Dlink 504t. It solved all my problems and works like a dream. The airport extreme was connected in minutes and started broadcasting a signal instantly and i have had no trouble since. The siemens modem really sucked thats for sure.

Airport Extreme and Optus Speedstream 4200 modem solution

I also had problems connecting to the internet with the Optus Siemens Speedstream 4200 ADSL modem and the Airport Extreme base station.

Apple Technical Support were great with helping to solve it- they are well aware of the problem apparently:

The Speedstream 4200 modem supplied by Optus comes pre-configured in a mode called "Optus Bridge", and the optus PPPoE username/password are stored in the server in the modem.

For the modem to work with airport extreme, you will need to change the modem setting to "bridge" mode, and then configure airport extreme to connect using PPPoE

To change modem to bridge mode:

Connect modem directly to computer by ethernet.
Access server in modem by typing http://10.1.1.1 into a web-browser (NB Safari 3 can be temperamental - I used Firefox)
Click on settings on the left hand menu
Click on the "mode"
Go to settings and change mode to "Bridge".
Save settings
Reboot modem.

Once the modem has rebooted completely, turn off power and connect modem to WAN port of airport extreme.

Now use the Airport Utility to configure the airport extreme base station:
(AirPort Utility is located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder on a Mac, and in Start > All Programs > AirPort on a computer using Windows)

Open AirPort Utility, select your base station, and then choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu. Enter the base station password if necessary. Click Internet in the toolbar, and then click Internet Connection. Choose PPPoE from the Connect Using pop-up menu.

To set up your base station to use PPPoE:
Enter the User Name, Password, and any other information your ISP gave you.

Click Update to reset the base station with these new settings.

Turn on your modem once the base station has reset.
You should now be able to connect to the internet

On a windows computer, you may need to reboot the computer.

Hope this helps.

netgear DM111p & Airport Extreme

Hi

I am having dramas setting up wireless in my home, sorry let me clarify... getting my airport to read my modem?

My macbook Pro is reading the wireless connection perfectly from the airport extreme. but i am not getting internet via wireless or via ethernet from the extreme. i do get internet from the modem? I have configured the modem to receive BRIDGE mode...

I have spent 1 hour on the phone with Apple support and they got me to reset the airport etc, went through a lot and basically they told me it was the modem set up! there isn't much to change in the modem settings? and I have called Netgear and they told me I have the appropriate configurations.

I am just thinking maybe this modem doesn't work with AIRPORT? can that be true? and I am thinking if I buy another modem it will solve the problem fingers crossed?

Any heads up on this?

Thanks guys

kittygroove, you may be better starting a new thread with your question ... there's a few people on MTAU who know a bit about modems, routers etc (sorry, I'm not one of them) but your query might be lost in a topic about airport express and optus.

Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou

@tonykam

I just want to thankyou for your post. I have been trying everything i knew how to setup a 500GB Time Capsule, which i could use but couldn't get the internet connected and I could not for the life of me work out why it wasn't working. I followed your post and it worked a dream. The only difference with the Time Capsule that was different to your post was that I had to turn the modem on before TC could be reset.

You have saved me from a whole lot of frustration. Thankyou for your post.

THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU

I had same problem connecting airport extreme to the Optus modem that was originally supplied by them.

Yes, you must configure the modem for bridge mode but I found I could not do this when connected through my iMac.

Then it dawned on me why Optus don't support mac connections.

As soon as I connected the modem through my work supplied windows XP laptop I was able to easily configure the Optus modem to bridge mode and from then on everything has worked flawlessly.

Hope this helps

Cheers

I can't directly help here but if NDT in particular or someone else with the same setup were to post some screen caps of the AEBS setup to rapid share, along with same for modem then problem solved!

I had a similar issue as well but different ISP and modem. It was a learning process.
