[Mergd] AppleTV release date?
Does anyone have any idea when the AppleTV will ship? The website says February. The pesimist inside me says that means Feb 28th. Anyone know if it will be earlier?

If they say February, they probably mean February. It won't be any earlier than that!

They haven't arrived here in Japan, and stuff here tends to arrive as early as anywhere else, being very near Taiwan and a big Mac market. Airport Extreme's arrived yesterday.

I ordered mine today from apple.com.au and showing a ship date of 28/02/2007 with delivery by 02/03/2007.
Just one thing, the TV I want to hook this up to has component video...but is 4:3, now I have checked with Apple and they assured me it will work, as in the settings menu you can change the TV ratio to 4:3. So hope that helps a few uneasy buyers with 4:3's.

I don't understand the hype. The Apple TV does not support surround sound, so the whole movie 'experience' can possible be as good as my $50 DivX playing DVD player with a USB port and 400GB HDD attached to play back video files. Can someone please tell me how the Apple TV is better that that? I get the wireless streaming convenience but the lack of DTS or 5.1 support just irks me.

IMO the Apple TV is just the video version of airtunes, apple had to release it in order to boost movie/tv show sales where people normally wouldn't buy them due to the restriction of it only being on your mac/windows/ipod.
It is of my opinion that the AppleTV currently is not going to be worth it in the aussie market, until such movie services are released here.

I still don't get it. Why would you pay $20 - $25 (my guess at eventual Aussie pricing) for a Hollywood blockbuster in stereo at lower resolution than a DVD?

I remember reading something in the past week - about delayed shipping / release - that it had pushed back from Feb to early March?
One of the posts above might support this.
I also am in the camp that doesn't get the whole AppleTV thing... my Mac mini plugged into my Sony Bravia X does everything plus alot more than AppleTV.

I'd seriously doubt it supports anything but the formats sold and supported by Apple.
My XBMC + Linksys AP will shit brix all over AppleTV.

I would not think so - appleTV will rely on iTunes - that is, you need to be able to import the video into iTunes, which you cannot do with Div X. Apple site says "Apple TV puts your iTunes library including, music, music videos and podcasts plus movie trailers from Apple.com on your TV. And your digital photos from iPhoto on a Mac or Adobe Photoshop Elements or Adobe Album on a Windows PC appear in high definition, so you can put on a stunning big-screen slideshow." No mention of your other videos, which are available through front row (even div x and wmv) if you have the right codecs installed.
The kind of div x tv shows abounding on usenet do not take long to convert and i imagine that pretty soon most popular conversion software will build in the standard settings. I imagine also that if appletv takes off, the standard formats may become more pervasive in the generation of relevant media files.

You are able to save divx movies as a .mov container file and play them through itunes, so in theory yes. in practice I won't guarantee it will work, and I won't guarantee the quality.
