Default Weird iphone charging issue

Hi,
In my quest for longer battery life, I diligently, run down the battery once a month, except this time I left the battery with very little charge to drain over night. Next morning, I plugged it into the computer but nothing happened, itunes recognised the phone but it wasn't taking a charge, soon after the yellow triangle appeared "Charging on this device is not supported." Funny, that's never happened before, I must have really run down the battery. Not to worry, plugged into the wall socket, in no time it was fully charged: thought nothing of it. Today though, with still 50% charge remaining, same error message. What gives?
Any suggestions?

Default Myths & Legends

Fully discharging your Li Ion battery is doing it damage, not helping it. Li Ion batteries do not get memory problems like the old Ni Cad batteries.

Here is some more info.

It amazes me that people still bow down to these "rules" with devices that they may only have for two or three years max.

It's YOUR phone. You go and charge it when it's convenient for you. Don't start treating it like last decade's technology (and who really gave that much of a fuck then, either?) I plug my phone in when I sleep.

Interesting article you linked to there, Mael. Thanks.

I had all sorts of problems, the phone not holding a charge for long, not charging when plugged in, it dropped to red quickly but was still usable for the rest of the day etc.

I thought it was the battery so I made an appointment with at the Apple Store. The genius suggested a system restore, and if that didn't work a full store then treat the phone as new rather than restore the backup. The first option seems to have worked, just waiting til I'm off contract and hit Optus for the 4G iPhone (when it comes out) in the second half of the year.

I had a funny thing happen to me this morning. I always charge my phone in my clock radio overnight as I go to sleep either listening to podcasts or music. When I awoke this morning the battery was only at 99%. I put it back on the charge as I showered and when I got out the battery was at 98%. Go figure.

I get the same with my iPhone & MBP the fix is just let it run down by 10-15% then charge again and you will 100% charged.

One last thing. Having run the battery down to zero or nearly so (dumb thing to do I realise now), currently I can't recharge my iphone via my imac, is this now a permanent feature? And, have I done irreparable damage to the battery thereby reducing its lifetime?
A trap for young players, be wary.
