Default Question: Percentage battery OS 3.0 on iPhone 3G

Hey,

I have an iPhone 3G and OS 3.0.

Just wondering whether I can enable percentage battery without having to jailbreak my phone. If I do require to jailbreak it, why should I? Is it worth doing? i mean i have had it jailbroken before OS 3.0 but now I dont think i have to.

Thanks!

Unfortunately, you have to jailbreak. With the emoji hack and the AppStore, the emoji files are stored in a part of the iPhone's filesystem that is easily editable (although it shouldn't be) by 3rd party apps called /Private/. The battery % part of the iPhone is stored in a section of the filesystem called /System/. This section is not only read-only for AppStore apps, but also off-limits to the iPhone's own software. Because of this, you have to jailbreak to enable it.

What are the advantages of jailbreaking I hear you ask?
- Full system customisation
- Apps that wouldn't get approved for the AppStore
- Full and easy graphical customisation
- Access to the iPhone's filesystem
- Unlocking of the iPhone so you can use it on another network etc.

I would jailbreak anyway. The added features are incredibly impressive and you honestly haven't got anything to lose. Along with percentile battery you will be able to use an app such as SBSettings to manage all parts of the iPhone (including running processes) to increase you battery life further.

The process for an iPhone 3G running 3.0 is very simple. Simply head here to read about redsn0w, the latest jailbreaking release from the dev team. There are download links on that page.

From there it is simply putting the iPhone in DFU mode (which isn't as hard as it seems) and then waiting a few minutes while it does its thing.

To top it off this is probably the last time you will be able to jailbreak as the 3.1 update breaks all holes in iBoot that have been found. Jailbreaking now will ensure that you can do it in the future. Your call.

Hi Matthew and folks, new to your forum.

Have a 16GB, 3G, and have wanted to jailbreak mine for customization.

You have a list of advantages, but what are the known disadvantages?

I heard if you jailbreak, you get cut off from other iPhone users who aren't jailbroke.

For example, a lot of my friends and cousins are all on Loopt. Would that mean that if I were to JailBreak my 3G, I wouldn't be able to connect with them anymore?

Also, is there a way to revert back, in case I didn't want the JailBreak system anymore?

Any info will be appreciated.

Thanks folks,

M80

Hi there!

Well it does potentially open you up to malicious apps. While the sources for Jailbroken apps are very well maintained and kept in check, there is a remote possibility of a rouge app finding its way onto your phone if you choose to install it. I have never heard of an app like this making it's way on to any source and nor do I think it will ever make its way on there.
(if anything you should be worrying about Apple's SMS Vulnerability )

There can also be issues with compatibility but most of these have been ironed out with the latest methods...

Not true. You will always be able to communicate with everyone else. Jailbreaking does not affect this or Loopt in any way.

There is always a way to revert back. iTunes actually make this very easy. A few clicks of a button and everything will be back to normal.

The entire process is very simple and doesn't take very long. And it is very supported. The jailbreaking community is meant to be over one million members stong.

Hope it helps.

Just letting you know that i jailbroke my iPhone 3G two weeks ago for the hell of it.

I then installed an app from Cydia that enabled the percentage battery.

1 week later i got the shits with how slow the phone was on jailbreak so i restored it back to the legit version of 3.01 but my percentage meter is still there. I cannot get rid of it. I also still have my custom carrier logo too. I think the only way to change these back is for me to jailbreak again and then reset the logo's then restore. I wont bother because i like it this way. I changed it for a reason.

I think this may have something to do with me backing up my phone while jailbroken and then restoring from my backup after i'd restored to the legit firmware.
