Default 3 Coverage Newcastle

I have just had a guy drive up from Sydney to buy my 3G Iphone and when he put his 3 sim in it showed no service. My question is should it have service ? He wants me to ring optus tomorrow and check it isn't locked but I am on a contract with them so it shouldn't be locked to them should it ? Also his friend put his TPG sim in and it worked. Any help would be appreciated.

It comes locked on the contract, but you ring them up and they'll unlock it free. TPG uses Optus towers, therefore TPG would work when its locked.

Its still locked if you're on a contract, but it is free to unlock.

Nup - has to be done on the phone. Optus send a request to Apple to unlock your phone via iTunes. It takes about a week to process.

Quicker ringing up and asking them to do it. Takes up to 10 working days for it to be unlocked.

Your kidding right ? The guy took it hoping I could ring Optus and get it done tomorrow. Looks like he will be driving back up here.

Say its an emergency and you're going overseas, they can generally push it through quicker.

I am on contract with Optus (~ 11 months into it) and requested my unlock a few weeks ago. They said it would take up to 10 days, but it was done ~2 days later, so you may be lucky. Though its possible the times might be longer at the moment with people upgrading to 3G Ss (& perhaps requesting unlocks for their old phones).

They sent an SMS when it was ready.

Go to the home screen, then:

Settings > General > About

Scroll down near the bottom and the IMEI should be between Bluetooth and ICCID.

I requested an unlock about a week back and it only took 2 days. Hopefully things aren't too much different with the launch of the 3GS for you.

Also, the phone will need to be restored through iTunes once you have gotten your confirmation text from Optus.
