Default 3GS Unlock

Anyone tried calling Optus for an unlock as yet? Any problems/issues or is it the same as last year?

Feel free to close this thread if it's being discussed elsewhere. I looked, but couldn't find it anywhere.

Why would you buy from Optus if you want it unlocked. Buy from Apple shop.

Default Virgin iPhone 3GS available

I just bought mine from the call centre (none available in Virgin shops so they said)

$70 cap plan + $15 repayment on 24 month plan.

According to the guy I spoke to I was the first person in Australia to buy a Virgin 3GS phone.

Will arrive by courier next business day usually, so should have it Monday.

Because I don't have $1000 in my pocket right now? Plus I like having a spare SIM to use. Does that satisfy your curiosity?

Not everyone has an Apple retail store where they live, anyway. Hence why I'm also going with Optus just to get the phone.

Not sure about unlocks, but I don't see why it would be any different to normal. Separate CSR team handles the phone stuff. What do you mean by "the same as last year"? What happened?

I got my 3G unlocked through Optus just the other day. "Up to ten days" they said, but it only took about two.

Just called Optus, same process as last time. Unlock could take up to ten days if it's not an emergency.

Unlocking is absolutely free for post-paid customers.

If you want it done fast, just say you're off overseas on Monday and they'll expedite the unlock process for you. I'm in no rush, so I'm happy to wait the possible ten days.

I just got my iPhone 3GS 32GB at about 10:30, posted up a unlock tracking thread over on Whirlpool Here.

Unlocking is free if your on a contract, and as fickwalker said, some of us dont live down the street/a suburb away from an Apple Store, infact i think the closest i'd get to one is maybe Perth, but im 400k away from there even! (and im pretty sure theirs no official apple store there either!)

So easiest way for me to get one on launch day was the local Allphones.

I just called up at 11:10am for my unlock, so we shall see how long it takes... my refrence (if it means anything) was 55102, so maybe people should get the refrence numbers and post 'em up so we can see if we can figure out how long it's taking based on those numbers?

Cheers,

SiriX

Thats what I did with my last one and will do with this one. The funny thing is I am actually going overseas the following week for 2 months so do need it quick!

Probably won't take too long, I called at 2pm with ref: 55115
So there can't be that many requests.
I am not anxious to get it unlocked as I plan on using my contract sim for another year at least, but in the meantime i can sell the phone if need be.

So that you get the phone at subsidised price from Optus?

So that when you travel overseas you could use the local SIM card?

So that you can use up the remaining call and data quota with another carrier which has already been paid for in the last billing period?

So that when you travel to a place where Optus' coverage is bad you might want to borrow another person's card to check your mail?

Can anyone yet report if the 3GS on Optus is getting better call quality / less drop outs than the 3G on optus?
