Default Phil Burgess - what a douche

not content with being ridiculed for his "apple should stick to its knitting" comments, he is back with more tripe.

yeah - because bigpond isn't the biggest/most useless walled garden going around.

now get the f%&k out of our country already.

iPhone failings great for Telstra: Burgess: News - Communications - ZDNet Australia

---

on a related note - i still haven't met anyone who has bought a song or movie from bigpond, have you?

"One of the best things that has happened to us at Telstra is the iPhone because people think, hah, I want to get an iPhone. Well, how do I get video calls on it? Well, you can't do video calls on it," he said during the speech to the Lowy Institute.

"How can I get 33 channels of live TV on it?" he continued, referring to services available on other devices on Telstra's Next G network. "Well you can't get 33 channels of live TV. I can't? Well, I thought the iPhone was the best in the world. Well it isn't. It's the best in the United States. The United States is a third-world country when it comes to wireless."

Despite the fact that Telstra is one of the vendors offering the gadget in Australia, Burgess further dug his boot into the device because of its limitations.

"It has embedded code that makes it hard to import material from outside the walled garden of Apple. That's the way they operate," he said.

Australia led the world in mobile, Burgess told the gathering, which he said meant that expectant users bit enthusiastically into their Apple iPhone, only to discover a sour taste.
I'm glad I don't have a Telstra iPhone. Tell Sol to go back to Mexico.

What a douche!! There main competitor is Google and Yahoo? What the?

Oh dont get me started on Sol! I couldnt go to the Telstra share holders meeting last year, so i sent my proxy form and voted NO to Sol's pay rise. After the event i hear 98% of shareholders said no, BUT HE OVERPOWERED IT AND SAID YES!!

Im glad their shares fell after i sold them and havent ever reached the price i sold them at again

I see some spin doctors really end up believing their own BS.

There is really so many things wrong with what he said, that the best thing is to ignore it as he is finally going away.

FWIW ... google is absolutely crapping all over sensis ... smart advertisers are realising that google is dollar-for-dollar at least 10x more effective than sensis and moving their spend accordingly.

A few years ago Bruce Ackhurst CEO of sensis replied to a question about google as a competitor with "google schmoogle" ... you can add him to the telstra douche list as well ... i note that google often gets 100x the search queries for popular terms like "melbourne hotels" ... who's laughing now?
competitor?

Its not the first time that Telstra has invested in the wrong technology.

Totally agree - Telstra needs to take a hard long look at themselves. Get out of the content game. Telstra is simply a conduit (phat internet pipe pls) to these services. They should *cough* stick to their knitting.

How embarrassing. I'm sure Google, Yahoo and Microsoft would be shaking in their boots if they knew what sort of competition Telstra were offering to them. Correction, they would be if they knew who Telstra were. Telstra is a small fish in a small pond... that's why Apple called the shots and Telstra were made to listen (ie. with the branding - or lack thereof - on the iPhone).

Surely no "smart" business person would open their mouth with such unbelievable crap. I bet Telstra's PR firm are rolling their eyes and rubbing their hands together in the accounts department. What a short sighted idiot. Most of what he sees as advantages on other phones are exactly the kind of crap that makes most phones slow, and unusable. How many people are really watching tv on their phones...?

I'm not planning to jump to defend all of Phil's comments, after all he has a business to run and a responsibility to inflate his own products (just like Apple's HiFi was going to revolutionise how we listen to music), but I feel people, here, (dons asbestos suit) are choosing to selectively criticise only where it suits them.

  • Could someone here please explain how I can get video calls on an iPhone?
  • Could someone here please explain how I can view live TV on an iPhone?
  • Could someone please ask the developers rejected by the AppStore if they feel Apple is a walled garden?

No one is being asked to bathe in Phil's shadow, but why do people selectively ignore the truths he does speak?

Default I couldn't be happier

He's just pissed because iPhone doesn't use all Telstra's crap Next G bloat services.

Apple has delivered a product that gives us everything we want and bypasses telco's 'would you like fries with that?' junk food.

Nobody with email needs MMS. Nobody with youtube, iTunes and the internet needs television on their mobile. Nobody at all needs video calls - until Skype or someone else gives it to us for the price of the bits.

Telstra is pissed iPhone is selling so well (although not for them) and they can't shovel crap into it as we carry it out the door.

Gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside.

Hey, no-one previously even needed an iPhone at all - the human race made it this far without them. But fortunately you're now here to tell us what we do need. Thanks for just being here.
