Default iPhone Speed (Not Network Speed)

I am not sure if this is normal or not but often when I am flicking between Apps on my iPhone... like going from Phone to Contacts for example... my iPhone pauses and gives me what seems like up to a second or three before responding to my fingers.

Either I've got a weird dirty finger thing going on or my iPhone needs some sort of purge or iPhone does exhibit some performance lags which are noticable if you are using the thing in the real world...

I have an 8GB iPhone 3G with no additional apps, music or videos installed (to me it's just a phone... a cool one but just a phone nevertheless) with the latest iPhone software 2.0.1 on Telstra.

Just be clear - I am not talking about network speed here - I am talking about the speed of the actual iPhone in responding to user commands.

I have noticed Contacts (OK, I have, ooo, a dozen or so so it should cause too many problems) is the worst offender.

Do I need to do something to speed it up?
