Unhappy 2G SIM Locked - iphone disabled with upgrade

I purchased my iphone in Hong Kong in early May and have been using it on the Telstra network ever since without any problems (albeit without accessing the internet etc - no desire).
Last night I downloaded the recommended upgrade whilst synchronising with my PC - this upgrade disabled the iphone. Now I am unable to use the iphone at all.
The message "SIM Locked. Insert an unlocked and valid SIM to activate iPhone" appears.
I contacted Telstra where I was given mixed messages - at first I was told I may as well throw my near new iphone in the bin as it is not supported in Australia.
The second person at Telstra I spoke to was a little more helpful and suggested I contact the company in Hong Kong I purchased it from and also contact iPhone re the problem.
I have sent an email off Suntek Company in Hong Kong - but am not that hopeful of receiving the help I need.
I have searched the iphone website for some answers re FAQ's but found nothing.
Can anyone help with what I should do?

Take decryption's advice. I am surprised people call their carrier about it since it's unlocked. And a first gen.

Thread 1 - I don't have a MAC computer so I can't use the BabySteps Guide.
Thread 2 - I don't live in Melbourne, nor do I feel comfortable about sending it to someone I do not know.
Any other options?

Download Winpwn and use it. Main Page - WinPwn

Go to iClarified - Apple News and Tutorials and look in their tutorials section for a step by step guide on how to unlock your iPhone with 2.0 firmware.

If you're in Canberra, send me a PM and we'll work something out, I've had to Jailbreak/update so many 2G iPhones it's not funny.
