I had the same problem on the two phone's I've done. It is easy to get around though, because it does actually do the restore fine, it just doesn't recognise that it's done it. So, after doing the restore once, go into iTunes prefs and, under the Syncing tab, delete the back-up of the phone. Then connect the phone again and this time choose "set up as a new phone". The it will back itself up, and after that it recognises it fine, and all is well.

I think I am going to have to start over again tonight. Mail is crashing now, too, and Mail on the phone cancels sync from iTunes... so I think the new phone thing is where I will go with it, later, without even attempting to use a backup.

Thanks for the advice, LB

Is point 8.3 mentioned because data ends up being enabled and this can be very costly?

Once I am about to edit the info do I just remove it?

Yes. The carrier lists for Optus and Vodafone (but not Telstra) turn off the menu item that allows you to edit your APN which is the address that allows your phone to access data via GPRS. If you want to disable the GPRS data access, for expense or any other reason, you need to do it by putting a nonsense APN in. If you just leave it blank, it may fill it in again by itself.

Once activated, you will find the menu item in Settings>General>Network>Cellular Data Network.

Thanks for the guide laughingbird, updated from 1.1.2 without any problems. After a few days of using 2.0.1 it seems to be horrendously slow in Contacts and lacks a few of my old favorite apps at this point at least. Your time and dedication are commended.

Wow! Worked flawlessly for a very nervous non-geek looking to upgrade from 1.1.3 to 2.0.1. Only thing I changed was not resetting my Vodafone setup and it came back online with Voda running as normal.

Big thanks laughingbird

led-zep - You may want to try downloading the tools using firefox..

I used safari the first time and I couldnt get the pwnage to find the ipsw files until I did it again using firefox.

Are you sure you are selecting the iPhone 2G firmware file? Make sure you are not downloading the iPhone 3G or iPod Touch firmwares.

i downloaded everything in safari. and the firmware version is correct, each time i have tried to download it again it is the exact same file, can i connect my iphone to itunes then hit update and download the 2.0.1 update? or now that 2.0.2 is out will it prompt me for that one?

If you are using Safari to download it, you have to disable the auto unzip feature.

iTunes will only give you 2.0.2 now. If you don't get anywhere, download but don't install 2.0.2 through iTunes, and then sit it out for another few days until the new pwnage tool comes out to enable you to pwn the new firmware. You'll probably want to do it anyway and it will probably only be a few days.

Thanks for the great guide laughingbird! Worked a treat.

Everything went well, the only problem im finding is that when I installed the localisation it was showing my numbers fine... until I did a restore of my old profile in iTunes. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing the localisation app but still no go. Does anyone know the directory and file for a manual edit?

Cheers,
