Default Visual Voicemail...

A subject that hasn't been broached in awhile, what's the go with Visual Voicemail on the Australian carriers. I can't say I've seen anything that suggests they are using it, which is a shame, considering it's one of the iPhone's better features.

Anybody seen anything to suggest otherwise, or are we forever doomed to the "Press 1 to delete message, press 2 to move to next message" horror that is the current solution.

Optus has it as an add-on in their plans, but the costs are not mentioned.

BIG EDIT!: It said voicemail, not visual voicemail.

I don't think we're getting it, no mention on Optus, and Vodafone has said they won't have it in any of their markets right away. Who knows with Telstra, given they got the phone so late they probably haven't had time to put it in place.

It's overrated for the reason that it sucks currently. Imagine being able to just go into your messages, and select the voicemail messages like reading an email, instead of going through the annoying voice process.

I hate voicemail too, but the iPhone sure as hell makes it into something I can see myself using.

I thought I had read the T&C's quite thoroughly, and I didn't read a mention to visual voicemail. Where did you read that?

Um where? An Optus employee says that Visual Voicemail is not implemented in Optus. They had just upgraded their voicemail services a few months ago, but it did not feature anything like Visual Voicemail.

Who said it's a useless feature? I actually love it! Instead of wasting time listening to a succession of boring messages, it would have been great to pick to choose to listen to people who are important - or you know will leave important messages. That way I am always on the go and knowing who I really need to get back to. Anyway, sure, its like email - you can to read those that are interesting FIRST (when you have time) based on who sent it. So yes, I really wanted this feature on my (coming) iPhone.

I personally don't care if we get it or not. I have a visual voicemail like service at work (all voicemails get emailed to me as a .wav file) and i still hate voicemail with a passion.

I would much rather someone send me a txt msg or email if they get in contact with me via phone.

Visual voicemail "is not available at launch" is how Optus are putting it. Whether it will ever be available is not clear.

Interestingly Visual Voicemail is featured on the Giant iPhones LCD screens in the Apple Store Sydney windows. Whether this means it will be available though is anyone's guess.

It could be coming to Telstra or something, they just can't advertise it much because 2/3 of the customers won't be getting it.

It's a moot point, but Three has the capability of voicemail as email, effectively allowing you to jump to whichever voicemail message you want rather than having to listen through all of them in succession. But, as I said, it's a moot point. Three's wayyyy out of the game.

Um. How can they leave a message on your voicemail if they "can't call" you in the first place? Think about your statement properly first. If they can't call, they would either text you or email you. So, not quite sure what your point is.

But don't go imposing your preferences on others! Think of those who don't have email or a mobile phone? How else can they "leave" message for you if you're not available to answer your mobile?

My mother and many other people I know don't have a mobile, or really don't know how to use emails. My mother always keeps in touch with me by calling. And when I'm busy (she ultimately calls when I am with my patients), it goes straight to voicemail.

As much as we live in a technologically enabled environment, not everyone can text (well, or fast! my poor father doesn't know how to) or type and email (my father again! Two finger typist!). Calling is the best, fastest and easiest option for them.

They're probably showing off the features. I doubt we will get it. There's a lot of programming and setup costs to implement a whole new voicemail system for just one their company's many diverse products.

The US Apple website promotes Visual Voicemail, whereas the AUS Apple website doesn't - so I think we can safely assume that it won't be available in AUS or at least not available on all carriers.

Is this Telstra service useful to anyone as an alternative?

It may well be a requirement of Apples that the telco's implement it. They have done it overseas (O2 for instance). I'd say eventually we will all have it, but it'll depend on how quickly the telco's want to spend their/our money.

It is mentioned in places, but I agree, I don't think it'll be available for a while yet.
