This seems rather odd... have you tried asking it to test 768 Mb rather than "all" (by clicking the radio button underneath the "all" radio button?

So I've had a couple of attempts at this. First time only scanned about 200MB, second time it took about 1 1/2 hours to scan 328MB. The memory it is managing to test comes back ok, but I have no idea why it doesn't test all of it.

Extremely odd... sounds like hardware issues may well be involved, which might be the cause of the panics and so on.

Guess my only options now are to take it to someone to have a look at. It hasn't had any panics this week but seems to have trouble starting up. It's taking a few attempts every time to actually get it through start up or it freezes after starting any programs and then takes a few re-start attempts to get working again. Trying to only put to sleep and see if it copes better without any shut downs.

So still having problems. took 45min to start the computer the other day so I could back to my external drive. Occasionally crashes right after starting first program but if it gets through first bit ok, then runs fine for the rest of the day as long as it doesn't go into sleep mode. Then next time I re-start or wake it up, issues again.
I am copying all the files to a powerbook that I've borrowed from a friend. Is it worth trying a clean install? (will have to go back to panther and then upgrade to tiger as I only have an upgrade disk for tiger)

Troublesome laptop with Kernel panic!

Dear shelly79,
I have been reading of your laptop problems although haven't seen anyone recommending you opening up in another account/log in .
If you get the same problems while logged in as another account , you can then be confident the problem is hardware and not software related.
I have been able to overcome some kernel panic issues myself rather then mucking around trying to correct the problem causing the drama, I simply used the new account until I had the chance to do a clean install and then I was back to a clean and happy OS (admin) account.
As you already have your back ups you won't have to drag any data from admin to the new account.
Helped me so good luck!
