Shame, but sometimes the computer cannot record the reason for the panic. In the second link for my post above it lists a bunch of ways of trying to avoid kernel panics.
In your case the most important things to have a look at relate to checking the integrity of your disk.
Quote:
Try Disk Utility
Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
Click the First Aid tab.
Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
Select your Mac OS X volume.
Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.

I am now running tiger but originally had panther. I don't have the tiger install disk because it is from a friend's family pack. Found my original disks, I have 2. Mac OS X install disk (panther) and another additional software and apple hardware test. If I run the hardware test will this mess up tiger (and everything else on the computer?) Backed up but don't want dead computer.

You'll need the tiger disc to run the appropriate disk utility program.

Can I use any tiger disc or does it have to be the one I installed with. Will take a few days to get the one I used but can get hold of another one in the meantime?
I've had 4 kernal panics this morning! Panic, restart, panic, restart, panic, restart, panic. Fingers crossed that this restart takes...

Any tiger disc should be fine.
Sounds like things are getting worse, which does point to a hard drive failure coming on. Good to hear you have backed-up.

Ok. So ran disk-utility tonight. It went fine and said there were no repairs. Can't help feeling a bit ripped off for that. Repairs might have re-assured me, strangely enough. Hopefully that is enough to keep it working for a while longer (well until the new MBPs come out).
Thanks for your help!

Got another Kernel panic this morning. Guess I just have to wait and see, keep backing up and hope that it doesn't die on me too soon....

Ok, so this morning slightly different panic. Instead of the Kernel panic I got several load - reloads of my desktop, followed by partial black screen with white writing:
System failure cpu=0, code 00000009 (Invalid pmap)
various parameters
Kernel version Darwin Kernal Version 8.11.0 Wed Oct 10 18:26:00 PDT 2007
various other stuff
Obviously I didn't write everything down that it said. I have had similar screens before I started getting the kernel panics, but they were scrolling and I never managed to really read them. To re-start from the scrolling screens I had to pull the power and battery, but for this one I was able to just hold down the power key to re-start.
I'm all backed up but no computer is still a disaster!

Did you recently install any additional RAM?
What version of the Cisco VPN client are you using?

No new RAM.
Upgraded Cisco VPN about a month or so ago, Version 4.9.01

A good (free) ram memory test program is available at Kelley Computing - Rember
Give this a run and see what it reports to you.

Can you live without the VPN client for a couple of days? If so, run the installer again and choose to uninstall. See if the crashes persisit.

Ran this and all tests passed but it didn't test all the memory although I selected all.
Total built-in memory: 768 MB
Available memory: 121 MB
Requested amount: All MB
Memory allocated for testing: 121 MB
Ran again, this time it tested 320 MB

Could try that because I don't use it often. However that also makes it less likely to be the culprit I would have thought. I maybe use it once or twice a month.

Rember test has now managed to test 359MB (out of 768 MB). Each test has managed a little more. All tests passed.
