If anyone's upgrading soon, I'll buy your old Hard Drive, as long as it's a Hitachi HTS541612J9SA00, manufactured in 2007.

email me here:
danny@tropicalgrid.com

...if this applies to you.

thanx

Just upgraded my MBP hardrive - $115 for Western Digital 320GB from OWC - bought two plus an external bus powered FW800 drive enclosure.

320GB 2.5" Western DIgital Scorpio 5400RPM... (WD3200BEVT) at OWC

OWC Mercury On-The-Go 2.5" FW800/USB2.0 Encl... (MOTG800U2) at OWC

Ordered on a Saturday, chose the cheapest freight option, they were delivered on Wednesday.

Uses super-duper to clone existing drive to one of the 320GB drives - real quick with FW800 - then take about 20 minutes to swap in the drive - ready to go (as earlier poster said, use the ifixit guide - just don't disconnect the cables). Now using the second drive as a backup.

The new drive is only 5200, but it feels snappier - perhaps its having a drive that is 30 per cent full instead of 90 per cent full. It also seems to run cooler.

Bought a 320GB Seagate Momentus 7200RPM Hard Drive yesterday for $210. Cant tell you how great it is not not be stuck with the 120GB I had in my MBP for a year!

Cloned it with my current HD with Carbon Copy Cloner while it was in an external case.

Read through a few tutorials and watched a few youtube vids of the process. Its really not that hard. Just make sure you've got the right tools and be gentle.

It booted up immediately, and now I've got an extra 200GB to play with. Pretty happy.

OK I've just done a big upgrade to the Samsung 500GB in my 15"" Mac Book Pro. I was overseas preparing for a meeting last month and suddenly ran out of swap space on my 160GB Hitachi original drive in my MacBook Pro. Big drama to purge some files onto my clone external drive in time.

On return to Aus I went and talked to NextByte about upgrades. They could offer 320GB but were happy to install a bigger drive if I could source one. I found a local Melbourne supplier with the Samsung, read a bunch of reviews and decided to go for it.

TinyURL link to PC CaseGear website

NextByte installed it within two hours for $150 and I carbon cloned my original drive back to it.

Now i have 300GB spare and I'm a happy chappy. Disk appears just as fast as original despite lower spin speed.

Satisfied for a year or so....

So does the 7200rpm chew up more battery life compared to the 5400rpm? Performance wise is there a notable difference to warrant the purchase of 5400rpm instead of 7200? 5400rpms is cheaper as well. I am considering an upgrade for my MBP to possibly 320Gb, which would give me more than enough room to run Vista and have a bigger bootcamp partition.

I did the upgrade to a 320GB 7200rpm.. No battery difference, and no noticeable performance gain. But I wasn't on the lookout for that. Everywhere i read said that from 5400 to 7200 you probably lose like ten minutes of battery so I didn't care that much.

Yes, Apple always have plans to upgrade the MacBook(pro) range. According to previous experience, it's coming "soon".
