New design MBP - worth the wait for rev.1 or buy the current MBP?
Hi guys,
I'm tossed in the dilemma in getting a Pennryn MBP now or wait for a new design in a couple of months. I do not need it yet but I can get the base model MBP for around $2200 after discount. Will be doing a lot of 3D work and video editing when my new jobs starts in July. Would like to buy now so i have something new to play with but if its getting updated soon, just wondering if i should wait for a new update or not..help me decide guys~!!!
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks!!

These got updated not long ago. I doubt they will be releasing a new one until toward the end of the year.

You would probably be waiting 4 to 6 months for the next gen MacBook Pro.
I just bought mine a few weeks ago, and am delighted with how it performs.

I don't do the type of work you have mentioned earlier (video and 3D), but I'm finding it snappy for photo editing. Mine is the base model with 256 MB of video RAM, but I'd be exploring the cost/benefits of the next model up with 512 if I was in your position.

I know something happens every tuesday to products that haven't been updated in a bit, but where did you get the info that Apple was making a new MBP design?

If I were you, what I'd do is grab a refurb MBP for the time being, use it for a year, let a Rev B of whatever new model come out and purchase that. I highly suggest you stay away from playing the waiting game.

The first MacBook Pro was announced in January 2006, shipped in February and then a new one came out in May. The current models were released in February containing Penryn chips with the older boards used for the previous generation. Intel will release proper Penryn chip+board combo in May. Apple, having a contract with Intel that gives them first dibs on any processor Intel makes, will not want to be behind other brands in releasing the latest and fastest.
It's not difficult to figure out Intel's roadmap, it's all there in Wikipedia and Intel's own website along with hundreds of other sites. Just need to know Apple's pattern in choosing the processors, which models will supersede the existing ones, and when the release date is. Usually one month after Intel releases the chips, Apple brings out a new Mac.
If Apple's new MacBook Pro will be a completely new design, I'd stick with the current one. Avoid version 1 products.

The "latest" MBP is hardly a huge step up from previous models - new chipset, faster CPU, faster graphics, same casing apart from trackpad. I would consider it to be a "revision C" than a completely new, unknown entity. The issues have been well and truly ironed out.
So just go for it - if you wait like this you'll never buy a new Mac ?

if you have a need, buy now... as has been said above there's always rumours, there's always stuff being developed. i reckon if you wait a few years you could hold out for the OMG AWESOMEZ OctoCore MBProExtreme.
