I wasn't trying to imply that, if I did.

windows tablet PCs werent received so highly so here's hoping Apple can revitalise that market. Those concept images are to die for!

A Windows tablet PC is still a Windows laptop. I have to use Windows (using it right now) but I don't have to like it.
It's not so much the tablet features of those mock-ups that interest me, it's more the flexibility of the possible device.
You could use it as an extra large iPod touch when you're travelling or commuting. You could hook it up to a wireless broadband modem for on-the-go internet access. When you get home (or to work), you can stick it in a dock and use it as a monitor with a keyboard and mouse.
Not that I'm getting my hopes up though...

I understand the concept of the air as being wireless but I still don't know why they didn't include a 3g chip in it and better battery life. Not having an optical drive doesn't bother me nor does not having FireWire (fw400 isn't really much faster than USB 2.0 and fw800 is obscure and expensive; the future of FireWire I guess looks a bit bleak).
I would be suprised if apple released a tablet. they generally have not been adopted in the past despite being pushed. This is probably to do with a crap implementation with windows, I think keyboards and mice will take a while before they start disappearing from our desks

I own an Air and 24" iMac... the only situation I could see myself using this, is wall mounting it somewhere in the kitchen... which isn't a bad option, but a bit extravagant considering where the price might be.

I just got the air (only got it as it was at $1500 for a 5 month old machine that had only under gone 15 charge cycles!) and it is fantastic! Always wanted a laptop that is superlight after lugging my 17 inch powerbook everywhere. I think apple got it right with the design and lack of optical drive...it is rare for me to ever need one unless backing up/ripping off movies/music...who does that on the road anyway? The air functions perfectly as an ebook as well with the bright screen, size and weight distribution! Great in trains and out under the sun! My only complain is with the ports...what is the deal with FW removal?! FW400 is still way faster than USB2....just compare FW sync of older ipods to USB syncs of newer ones! I think it will be perfect if they simply include a few more ports, mini dvi,FW400/800, esata, extra USB2. I think this can come in additional latches, one at the back and one more on the other side of the machine. Top this up with stereo speakers and the new 250gb ssd drives from samsung.....the voodoo envy will turn green!

Really? Considering the price I didn't think Apple was marketing it as a "second computer".

Another thread brought back from the dead!
Apple already had the perfect form factor for a tablet - Newton 2000/2100. With the weight loss you could have with today's components, plus a high resolution screen, it would be the perfect size for a tablet computer. Any bigger and you're essentially lugging an lcd display around. That sized screen coupled with the iPhone's front end (rather than the standard OS X front end) would be brilliant.

The tablet concept is too niche at the moment... as cool as the iPhone is (and yes, I use one), my V9 is a better phone and my MacBook is a better portable and Blackberry is a more mature and well sorted Enterprise PDA...

Nothing touches iPhone for coolness and completeness but I fear it's coolness outshines it's inadequacies - it's far from perfect.
I miss using my V9.
One thing that surprises me with the iPhone are the little pauses when switching functions (like calling up contacts when in phone mode for example - annoying).
Overall I love my iPhone - I just don't think it's the best in any of its functions except web browsing, syncing with my Mac and it's touch screen.
