Faint vertical bands on MBP screen

Hi

Tonight I had these faint vertical bands appear on my MBP screen. They were on the bottom of the screen starting from the bottom edge and going up about a third of the way up the screen. I tried shutting down the MBP but I had to force quit Mail.

After starting my MBP the bands disappeared and it looks normal again.

When the bands appeared I was running on the battery only. I tried plugging in my power adapter and there was no change. I was also running VMWare and had a couple of apps going in Leopard.

I've got the current entry level model 15 inch 2.4 ghz Core 2 Duo MBP with 4 gig of memory, the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT with 256MB and it's still under warranty.

Could it have been a bug in Leopard or should i consider taking it back under warranty? I updated Leopard with the latest updates this weekend. I calibrated the colours and ran a colorsync utility and it found no problems.

Thanks

No. I didn't think to make a screen shot. I should have.

I don't think a screen shot will work. you need a camera...Because if it's a problem with the display a screenshot won't pick it up.

It has a matte screen.

The problem happened after I installed software onto Windows (so I can finish my Diploma, before anybody comments ) in VMWare Fusion.

Thanks. I typed that before I had my coffee. My "coffee-less brain" strikes again.

Hi

I rang CompNow and I was told it was probably just something that fixed itself when I restarted my MBP. That does go with the idea I had about it possibly being a driver conflict when I ran VMWare Fusion.

It still has me concerned so I'll do a Google to see if anybody else has had this problem.

I've found discussion on this problem, with a possible fix, on this forum thread. The possible fix is posted by Sh33p.dawg on March 16, 2008 8:39PM. It seems to correspond with my experience in that it happened when I was just using the battery.

It's possible I was so tired that I didn't notice my MBP going into sleep mode.

Somebody posted a picture of this problem. The picture makes the vertical bars look darker than when I saw them. Here is another example.

If anybody else finds a fix I'd like to hear about it. It sounds like it could be a firmware issue.

EDIT: Further down on that thread I listed in the first paragraph essd posted on Mar 25, 2008 7:33 PM that he/she found a fix.

To quote essd:
Quote:
When the issue occurs, go to System Preferences -> Energy Saver and set the "Put the DISPLAY to sleep..." option to 1 minute. Once you've done that, simply wait one minute for the display to turn itself off, press a key, and everything will be restored to normal with full backlighting.

You mean eject?

And that just turns off the display?

Not really a fix unless sleeping the display and re-enabling it will fix the 'curtains'.
