Brand new Mac starting up with grinding sound :/
Bought a MacBook Pro 15" (new entry-level model) from JB Hi-Fi (Leichhardt) today @ 6.50pm.....why? because they were open.
Brand new and factory sealed, took it home and plugged it in to find I have a grinding, whirring sound in the top right of my Mac.
Don't have a clue what to do as I know for a fact it was the last one in the shop, and they're (so my Mac-buying taxi driver was telling me) a pig to get refunds from, and they can't replace without stock.
Should I take it into a reseller and use the standard warranty replace, or get the laptop replaced, or something else?
*gnurggh* . To make matters worse, I have a meeting on Tuesday morning which I'm presenting at, and my presentation is on Keynote, which was why the rush for a MacBook this weekend!

If the noise is really bad I would get a replacement the noise could be the hard drive of a fan.
I think your best option would be the replacement as it could suddenly die.
It should be easily done the guys at that store have been rather good as I frequent that store as it is close to work.

Seconded - that noise is your main cooling fan, and it should definitely not be making such a horrendous noise ... at worst, it'll become a high pitched whoosing 'eeeeeee!' noise when under load.
You, my friend, have a DOA machine, and return it to place of purchase for a replacement. If you experience any hassles with JBH, contact Apple Australia directly and calmly explain your predicament -- they will either send you a courier box to exchange the machine or liase with another reseller with stock to replace it.
Apple's resellers aren't always the best people to deal with, but Apple do go out of their way to be helpful as much as possible.

Thanks for the wonderful advice above. one reason I bought the mac was that I didn't want to spend another $500 quieting down my next PC! Wasn't sure if it was doa-able for fan whirr if it booted fine.

I might be wrong on this, but if a product fails within the first 7 days of purchase you are legally allowed to get a refund or exchange.
Here is a link what should help you and perhaps give you some ammunition when dealing with them.
Warranty and refund obligations

Bring it back and get a new one. I don't think you would want to take any chances.

Chris @ Leichhardt was pretty helpful, out of stock, sent me to Parramatta. I called ahead and asked that they put one aside for me, they said they had 5 left and they would.....2 minutes before I enter the store they call and say "we're actually out of stock".
Chris then sent me to Miranda, where I walked in an 2 minutes later walked out with a !working! laptop. Mix of good and bad - certainly the $100 of taxi fares was painful, and the wasted time going to Parramatta by train!
looking forward to being a mobile mac-user!
cheers,
John

You can only DoA from the place of purchase. So the 2nd one you again have to take it back to JB or just do a warranty repair on it.

Sorry about being a little off topic, but am I the only one who finds the majority of posts in this thread a little confusing?
The OP simply got a DOA machine, and all of a sudden it's links to the ACCC. Seems a little extreme to me.

It's because resellers do everything they can to provide poor service and screw their customers.

Yeah, that was sarcasm. I actually agree with you. I thought that would be obvious.
