MacBook Fan - lawnmower??

Hey all, been using my MacBook lately, and since a few days ago, the fan's started to sound like a 'lawnmower' (though not extremely loud) for speeds above 2500RPM.

Is there anything I can do to fix, or a temporary solution, *apart* from taking it in to be looked at.

Cheers,
Beau

Excessive noise from the fans usually means either there is an airflow blockage (are ou in a dusty environment or have pets?), the fan-blades have become dirty & unbalanced the fan (do you smoke?) or the bearing is dying.

In all cases, a fix requires opening the machine.

Dusty environment unfortunately.

Someone also suggested compressed air might help....

My MacBook's dead silent most of the time, though I will admit that when I'm running BOINC it sounds like a jet airliner preparing for takeoff.

My Macbook usually sits at roughly 1700, but if I'm running something like a long youtube vid, or play music, it ramps up to 4000.

Right now it's at 1800, but that might also be due to the heatwave making everything hot.

Happened to both of my fans, they eventually *stop*, but that means no cooling funnily. :

Get it replaced if you have applecare.

Theres a fan utility out there in which you can control your fan directly LINK. You can then determine what sort of temperature the mac kicks the fan at the precise temperature you tell it.

Applecare is a good idea.

Hmm, it's been running at around 3000RPM today without the lawnmower sounds. Seems that compressed air helped, at least for the moment.

In any case, I'll drop it off at Next Byte next time I'm in Adelaide (around May. Going to see The Chaser :-)) and see what they say.
