MBP - Region Codes

i have used all of my 5 region code changes. is there any way to fix bypass or change this so that i can continue changing them.

i travel quite a bit and i'm always picking up DVDs in different countries, what can i do.

i also tried to play the DVDs on Windows Media, and Real Player, don't know about VLC. but they don't seem to work. my friends see to think that the region code is to do with the disk reader???

thanks,

Whatever its currently set at after the last change, is what it will stay at. You cannot change it now. It's locked down.

It is not a software lock, it is firmware locked to the drive.
You would need to hack the firmware of the dvd drive in your laptop,
some are hackable I believe and some aren't.

edit - region free firmware at last - Mac - Apple - Whirlpool Broadband Forums

read the thread thru and you should find the appropriate link.

In all seriousness, I think you should write a letter to the ACCC and tell them of your experience. If people are being sold products that stop working due to legitimate actions, such as playing DVDs that they've bought in different countries, then the ACCC can force the manufacturers to change their ways.

Just a suggestion...

Yes - once you find the correct firmware (check your exact model number under Apple's Profiler utility), you run the application and the drive is region free after a reset.

If you can't find the correct firmware and flash it, you will have a nice useless hunk of an optical drive

No, it's not too hard; if you let us know of the firmware we can find the right region free update for you.

Sadly you're out of luck there mate, there have never been any region-free firmwares available for it (probably because it's a combo drive and VLC should work OK with it).

Thanks mate, but what a bummer!

I have been using VLC to dodge my way around the DVD-region code thing, but lately I can't play some of the DVDs I have and usually I get these warning msgs from VLC

very annoying
