Macbook Hard drive Question

Hi All

About 3 weeks ago I purchased a new Macbook and in that time my system now says it has 44.33GB available with 29.88GB used.

I have installed about 4GB of Music & 5GB of photos. The application folder says it contains about 6GB of application files. I can account for about 16GB to 20GB of programs and files but the hard drive is meant to be an 80GB model, so this would mean that I have 20Gb of space used that I cannot account for, the Macbook is also saying that the drive capacity is 74.21GB I understand that some space is used for system info files but is that really 5.39GB worth (is this Leapard?) I have no other files on the Macbook as yet but am a little confused why it has so much of the hard drive space used considering I have only put 9GB worth of photos & music on plus Tiger Woods 08.

Could anyone advise what the hard drive capacity of a new Macbook is fresh from the box?

I only started to look into this when I found out Apple had brought out the new Macbook for $100 cheaper with a bigger hard drive this week... Any help with the above greatly appreciated.

Cheers Daniel

Remember that a "80gig" HDD isn't really 80 Gigs. It's to do with the size of a megabyte - it real size is 1024K, but HDD's are built with the assumption a meg is 1000K. Thats why when you get an iPod, say 30gig, it really says 28.7 (or something close to). The capacity of your HDD should be approx 74Gig Big.

You might also want to free up some hard drive space by removing unwanted Applications. Office is a good one to start with if you don't use it.

Thanks Jazzdog, sort of thought that but did not think it would be in the 5GB area. I think I have found where the files are now by using the get info option in the Macintosh Hard Drive folders. The library file has just shy of 8GB in it.

Thanks Silverdreamer, I have not installed Office yet and do not think I will, we have it installed in on our iMac and now looking at how little space we have on the Macbook I think I won;t be putting it on. Thanks all for your help but have found the culprit being the Library folder.

I think I might see how much it is to upgrade the hard drive...

You can also free up a GB or so by removing some languages that you might not use.
Monolingual works in 10.4 (Tiger), don't know about 10.5 though.

Disk Inventory X is a good help in seeing what's taking up disk space.
