connecting powerbookG3 to wireless router with WPA
Hi
I've got an older model but very reliable Powerbook G3 400 that is running latest 10.4 with inbuilt wireless. I also have a Belkin N1 wireless router and I can't seem to get the powerbook working on this router!!
The powerbook does see the router ssid and asks for the pre-shared key but just quites with an error, each time I try!!
The router is using WPA-psk key with TKIP encryption and a pre-shared key. I have other wireless systems in the house that works with no problem. Does powerbooks running 10.4 have issues with WPA-psk using routers? Is there a fix for this problem?
cheers

I have a Pismo 500 and I believe the original AirPort card in these models doesn't support WPA. If you want to connect with this computer you will have to use WEP...

I was dreading for an answer like that!!!
Is there any fix for this, such as software fix etc...? or just simply put another card?

Well, I just use WEP. It's plenty secure enough for the average person's small home network.

Not true - my bf has a Pismo 400 using the original AirPort card, connecting using WPA-PSK TKIP just fine to our AirPort Extreme (saucer edition), but before that, to a Buffalo AirStation G-MIMO router.
He's running 10.4.x, however, with all the AirPort updates (from 10.4.6, I think, to now 10.4.11).
My question is this: do you have your Belkin configured to allow B/G connections along with N? The original AirPort card is B.
Oh, and WEP can be broken in less than 60 seconds, btw...

I've got the Belkin configured as 802.11n & b & g. So it should work for the original airport card as well. Bandwidth is set to 40MHz (the only other alternative is 20MHz and I tired that one too without success)
The MacOs is 10.4.11 and airport card's firmware version is 9.52. So I'm pretty sure I'm up to date with all the software.
I'd be very curious to find out how did you manage to get yours working? or where am I going wrong?

Well, I was lead to believe this wasn't possible. I have the same base station so I'll have to give this a go and see what happens...

That's not strictly true. Someone would have to monitor between 2.5-4GB of network traffic to break the WEP. I probably wouldn't have that much info going over my small home network in a week. You can also increase your network security by creating a closed network and if you are sharing an internet connection with the base station by setting up access control.

I've got all the updates applied to the Pismo, including the AirPort updates (one mentioned compatibility with third-party routers, I think). All I did was select our network SSID, select WPA and type in the key - et voilα! Network connection. Seriously...I didn't have to jump through any hoops. However, you can't have WPA2 and use the Pismo, only WPA - WPA2 requires an AirPort Extreme card.
What firmware do you have installed on the saucer? I've got 5.7, which is the latest.

hmmm.... in mine I just selected my network SSID then typed the password! It didn't ask for WPA or WEP. I just presumed that's automatically detected and adjusted in the macos 10.4.x!.
And what saucer? do you mean Apple wireless router? I used Belkin N1 Mimo

Well, you were right. Last night I changed my AirPort encryption from WEP to WPA and it works fine with the Pismo. I also found that I couldn't use WPA+WPA2 option.

I was replying to rpjallan, who said he has the same router as I. The saucer's the previous AirPort Extreme router, it looks like a flying saucer

Coming back to the what I said before; settings on my Belkin is "WAP-PSK" and TKIP encryption. Wireless mode is set to n, g and b modes.
On the Mac side, Airport detects the SSID then asks for the pre-shared key. It comes back with error joining the network when I enter the key. There are no further settings in the Macos side, so I presumed that it auto detects the WPA and does sets itself up for the connection, once the pre-shared key is entered.
Are there anything else that I needed to do or set up?

Have you tried selecting the Belkin from the AirPort menu item? I always have to select WPA, WPA2 or WEP when doing that...
