Ibook - bad sectors in new drive??

i recently replaced the dead 30GB drive in my 12" iBook with a 120GB Samsung drive (all i could get).

After installing and partitioning it, a couple times on boot/restart it would come up with the finder/flashing question mark in the middle of the screen. This was sporadic, as it would boot fine on another restart.

I had not used the iBook for a while and when i attempted an erase and (re-)install of Tiger and had similar problems. For several restarts, the install disk (installer and disk utility) would not notice the drive at all). After a little while, it noted the drive and installed the OS fine. Whilst updating the OS, on some restarts it would not notice the drive again, then on another restart it would boot fine.

It is with someone considering buying it from me. I want to resolve this issue. Could the problem be anything but the drive - bad sectors? I pulled the machine down to ensure the drive connections were all good (fully plugged in), double checked everything else.

Anyone have similar experiences or ideas??

thx
c.

Warranty the new drive

Sounds like you got a dodgy one. Happens sometimes

hey, i had a similar experience when i replaced the hdd in my ti powerbook! it happened a few times, but then somehow it sorted itself out...... every time it happened the folder/? appeared for two seconds or so, then booted up fine! i never partitioned the drive.
hang out, and see if it alters in the next few days.

hope some of this helps

It might be time to try a SMART monitoring utility; a couple are outlined in the below link:

... sounds to me like you've simply a flaky drive; DOA as it were. I'd also find something like DiskWarrior to test your drive as well.

I think SMART is a waste of time myself.

Have a look at this: www.macgurus.com

I have been doing this with all my new drives for some time now...
