iBook HD erase ?

We are trying to erase a HD by disk utility method in order to sell the machine "clean" so to speak but in doing so in we are unable to select the drive to erase ???
Any ideas - Thanks

We tried the original disk method but the previous user/admin folder is still active when loaded/formated???

How about a complete reinstall of the OS?

You should be able to completely wipe the HD when installing Tiger/Leopard as there will be an option to completely erase and install the new system.

Pop your discs in and just install the OS again. That way the next user/new buyer will be able to have that out of box experience, with the video and setting up new user and all.

It should be an option but it's not selected by default (I believe).

When you choose the volume to install to, there should be a button in the bottom left of the screen (wizard) that says "Options" and it will give you about 3 ways to install the OS.

Erase and Install should be number 1... if I remember right.

You booted from the install CD/DVD, launched "Disk Utillity", clicked the "Erase" option, selected the disk you wanted to erase, selected the format, gave the new volume a name and then pressed the "Erase" button and it didn't work? I can't see how it is really possible for it not to work if you followed those steps. Please explain.

Or further to Kim's point, did you insert the first OS X Installer Disk, and Restart your iBook with the C key on your keyboard, held down, until both the grey Apple and the spinning grey network animation, appeared?
