CPU Usage at 100%

At the moment I am using HandBrake to reformat a Video_TS file to MP4 on my MBP17" C1D 2.16GHz, 2GB RAM, 100Gb 7200HDD. 18.56Gb free space.

My CoreDuoTemp statistics in the menu bar are indicating 86ΊC, 100% CPU.

iStatPro says the fans are around R=3410rpm and L=3421rpm (and not noisy) CPU A is 85ΊC, CPU user 82%.

Activity Monitor says HandBrake is running at between 184.5% and 200.8% CPU in the Process column and has been like this for the duration of the conversion 2hrs 01min.

Is this normal? is it OK for a prolonged period of time? Can or should I use other functions during a task like this?

Many thanks in advance.

From a service perspective, those temps are pretty standard. I would be concerned if you saw a value over 100. I wouldn't freak out about it, but make sure that the machine has some space to breathe during this process (clear some space behind it).

I have my MPB on an iCurve and can easily re-direct my floor fan to blow towards it if I'm encoding video. It certainly helps.

Perfectly normal and within normal parameters. Don't worry about it. Apple keeps temps high to advert noisy fans.
