As soon as we hear something, we can pass the information on to you.
Here's how it's looking: last week we checked Apple Australia's backorder; 1600 units of the 15" 2.4GHz models were on order with only 58 units to arrive into the country." I think I should have taken the $$ hit and gone through Apple.

So let me get this straight... Apple have a shortage on one of the products they make. Apple are giving the reseller vague information regarding ETAs (and I believe Streetwise here, that IS the kind of answer Apple give). And you want to blame Streetwise for these shortfalls and deal with Apple direct???

They still do.
If you're a teacher you'll be able to get a discount at all "Premium Resellers" (what used to be called AppleCentres).
If you're a Higher Ed student, you need to purchase from an on campus reseller. E.g. UNSW have a campus Apple reseller, however you do not have to be a student at UNSW to get the student discount.

Absolutely not blaming them at all (and apologies to Streetwise if it seemed so). My point was rather the assumption (correct or incorrect) that Apple would service their own direct orders before supplying resellers.
Not denying I'm impatient either

They are not supposed to, but I guess it wouldn't surprise me if they did that on the sly. In any case I've heard these could still be a fair few weeks away. Ahh, reminding me of the 90s
