Dead iBook G4?

After restarting my crashed iBook, this came up on the boot screen before the startup sound and partly obliterated the apple logo on the screen:

Code:
System Failure: cpu=0: code=00000009 (Invalid pmap)
Latest crash info for cpu 0:
    Exception state (sv=0x008EB000)
        PC=0x0009FED0: MSR=0x02003000; DAR=0xFFFFC21F; DSISR=0x42000000; LR=0x0009FE4C; R1=0xFC14FC21; XCP=00000000FRB (System Failure)
This looks like it may be a major hardware failure to me ...

Has anyone else seen a display like this on their iBook G4 and was the eventual diagnosis that it was beyond repair?

This particular iBook has not been very reliable.

I tried to boot the iBook from my tiger install DVD and it got no further. Now the DVD is in the drive and I can't use the eject key on the keyboard to remove it. Is there another way to eject the DVD?

or...

hold down: Apple-Command key + option key + O key + F key
as it's starting up, in order to see the Open Firmware screen -
(grey text on a lighter grey background).

Then type in:

eject cd

then press your return key

then type:

mac-boot

and press your return key again.

A number of factors contribute to kernel panics. Often at an early point in the boot such as this case, it does indicate a major hardware fault, but not always the CPU. As standard procedure, check all RAM and reseat to be sure. Also, test the cooling in the machine and run with the case open if necessary to determine if it's a heat issue.

Considering you attempted to start from other media, in this case the Install DVD and got no further, i'd rule out any software problems at this point.

Also interesting to note that in a Kernel Panic it will always say "Latest crash info for cpu X:", regardless of what the issue is. So it could be something other than the CPU.

Don't give up hope just yet.

The iBook is running again. I shut the power off to it for a day and gave it another try. Fortunately it is not my primary machine and I can live with it being unstable.

Grep,

I've hit those kinda problems with iBooks before, and without taking a really good look, it's actually impossible to know what's wrong with it, as it could be an intermittant fault of the logic board - or a case of the HD being not quite connected with its communication cables.

One solution I found accidently with one particularly maddening iBook G4 was to shake the bastard in an act of total rage, after which... oddly enough... it cut out doing all that kind of crap and started behaving with total stability.
