Macbook playing up big time!!

Im having quite a few issues with my MacBook at the moment, im on holidays and it always happens when i go away..

First of all the sleep light is constantly on, no pulsing or anything

Secondly the screen is flickering when its started up cold

Finally the magsafe adapter has started to play up a bit (last few days) its not turning on some times, other times its flickering or overheating (too hot to touch) but thats when its moving

The first and second issues, Ric has already said he could fix by replacing the motherboard. The last issue he doesnt know about as I haven't contacted him regarding it (I wont do so until i get home most probably)

I am on holidays in Port Macquarie, they have an apple centre here but im leaving thursday to go home.. maybe they can fix the Motherboard, im not sure if it will be the same as Ric is the one who has filed the problem to apple.

I will post some pictures later on to prove these things are happening (maybe some videos too who knows)

I love my macbook dearly, but I cant seem to picture why these things are happening to me when im on holidays
Slightly annoyed

Wally

These things invariably happen on holidays. It's because Murphy loves annoying people at the worst possible time. Kinda like when your doctor only works weekdays, you only get sick Friday evenings. Worse, when you only have weekday access to a computer repair place, then the computer will go down ten minutes after the repair place closed for the weekend. (It even happens when the computer repair people stay late most Friday evenings, the computer will go down shortly after they've gone home)

In the case of holidays, the computer will behave itself up until you have either left, or you're past the point of no return (i.e. after hours the night before you leave) If you're going far enough away for it to be a real PIA, it'll normally misbehave in a way that makes you THINK you can handle it for the duration of the holiday, and will either get worse or generally more aggravating during the course of the holiday. The closer you get to the end of the holiday, the worse it gets.

So, don't take it personally... that's what Murphys Law is all about. Murphy follows my family religiously, so I'm surprised he has the chance to do this to you. You've probably saved us from computer problems over the Easter break. So... Thanks!

When you come back to Sydney (or home, whatever) take it into an Apple Service Supplier (like Nextbyte etc. - even though they have such a low standing on these forums - I just can't think of a good one)

It sounds like either:

A. The power adapter is stuffed
B. The power supply is stuffed (likely to be in the adapter)
C. The Power Management Unit is stuffed (hence the flicker and going into sleep at odd moments)
D. The logic board is stuffed (but you're more likely to get scrambled video or random shutdowns)
E. It's a REV A. MacBook with the Random Shutdown heatsink problem.

Try this out first:

1. Turn the computer off by holding down the power button for 5-10 seconds (resets it)
2. Unplug everything
3. Remove the battery
4. Leave it without battery for at least 30 minutes to an hour.
5. Plug it back in with battery etc.
6. Start it up and hold down "Option-Apple-P-R-A-M" keys at once.
7. it'll chime twice.
8. Hopefully it fixed the problem for the time being.

I sincerely doubt the pram will make the backlight flicker... or the other issues he is having but i'm glad you didn't drag out the old chestnut of "repair permissions".

BTW - It's APPLE-OPTION-P-R to reset PRAM

First of all thanks for your replies

I am not getting random shutdowns which is good

Im not going into the city just to get my computer fixed, we take all the bypasses

I will send it to Macmate to get it fixed after i get in touch with him about the issues itself..

I will also try zapping the PRAM seeing if that fixes some things after.

Cheers
