My ibook G4 is.. yep.. still stuffing around

Hey everyone,

This is a follow up to two of my other threads;

The thread I started before taking my ibook for service,
[then my ibook was serviced and the hdd replaced] and
The thread I started when my ibook was still broken after the service

After this I took it in again, and just got it back yesterday.. They suspected - and i agreed when they told me - that the problems i was getting after the hdd was replaced were just the ramifications of the hdd stuffing up and corrupting the os in unforseen ways. They fixed os x (no idea how but a lot of my preferences were gone but my files remained).
I even stayed in the shop for a few hours and gave it a 'burn in' test, and it all seemed fine (crashed it twice by plugging in my nokia mobile couldn't crash it any other time).

So I was really happy and took it home, but it's still got problems, so I'll briefly outline what happened. I wrote this in an email to the apple store.

I just want to say, though, that i have nothing but good feelings towards the apple store I took it to. I'm not suggesting that any of these problems are because of them - they've done a good job as far as i'm concerned, and I'll continue going to them.. It's just this ibook is a bitch of a problem to deal with! Honestly, I wouldn't want it dumped on my doorstep.
The problem seems to come back after a day or so of being in the apple store.

Brought the ibook back yesterday afternoon, took it to my girlfriend's
house where we watched some movies on it and I briefly stuffed around
trying to network it with their windows PC (getting the PC to share
internet over a second ethernet card actually)
iBook sleeps, drove around a bit that night with the ibook in the back
of the car. I always make sure it is actually sleeping when it is
closed..
Got home, open the lid and the screen is static with only the mouse
able to move around. Can't force quit etc so eventually have to do a
hard reboot.
On reboot get a scare because it firstly boots to
1. That initial grey screen then no further (wait then reboot)
2. That second, different grey screen (where the apple logo would
usually be) then no further (wait then reboot)

Third time it booted fine and I used it normally then went to bed. I
tried a few 'test sleeps' which were OK.
Woke up this morning and opened the ibook. It worked fine for 30
seconds then applications started crashing and not responding (beach
ball until i switch apps). Thought I would have to reboot but after a
minute or two it sorted itself out and was fine.

Just now after breakfast resumed browsing etc. Tried to download a
small file and got the message in safari 'could not create file'. I
have seen this one before, it means that if I go to finder and try to
create a folder etc, I get 'An unexpected error occured (error code
-50)'. This always persists until I reboot.

Since taking it home I haven't plugged any peripherals in, only
connected via ethernet and airport.. Haven't updated os x from 10.4.6
yet either. When I put it to sleep (at my girlfriend's house) there
was no e'net connected and no airport connection.

After I post this I'll shut down and restart. This will remove the error -50 problem for a while.

I think I'll try format and reinstalling. Would this be a good move now?

Cheers

- Jeremy

Since getting it back, I have

Run Preferential Treatment
Run Disk utility and repaired permissions
Attempted to 'optimise system' using Onyx (it stalled)

Backed up everything

Yes - else it sounds like it needs to go back for HD replacement.... or perhaps even the logic board. Choose the simplest route.

Have AppleCare Protection Plan?

CW, it's already had the HD replaced .. It still faulted, so I brought it back in, and they did something and gave it back to me - but it's still no go.

There is such a thing as "twice in a row" - though it's possibly also a logic board issue.

Sorry, I mean it had the HD replaced the second-last time I took it in for service, which was about a month ago.

HOWEVER they only 'migrated' me from the old HD to the new, and they thought they might have brought over some software-related problems that were caused by the bad HD, which made sense to me. This is my motivation for reinstalling..
