Hi all

I have just solved my broadband connection problem for my MacBook. Telstra Wireless modem now up and running...hurray. (Cannot get ADSL or Cable where I live).

Now, if I want to use the MacBook in the bedroom, without plugging the modem in (it needs a mains connection, although not a cable or ADSL connection)....can I do it with an Airport setup?

What I am asking is....can I plug the modem in, in the study, then take its USB output, into an Airport unit....and then use the wireless capability of the MacBook to access the Internet through the wireless output of the Airport unit?

I hope that isn't too confusingly expressed..apologies as I am very new to the wonderful world of Mac.

No.

An Airport unit will only work with an incoming Ethernet connection, not USB.

Oh bollocks! Thanks anyway!

Edit....Is there another solution using PC style wireless routers?

most routers require an ethernet connection

a usb wireless modem needs drivers so you are probably out of luck...

Gah, wireless

Contact your wireless-ISP-provider and ask them to exchange their wireless modem with one that supports ethernet, or at least recommend one they support that you can buy.

Such things do exist, and will solve your problem.

Trust Telstra to provide wireless that still needs a few wires. A bit like the point you make when everything is pointless. As Brains said, an ethernet modem is your most likely solution.

Thanks all. Unfortunately I don't think Telstra have any other wireless modem options...

Maybe swap it for a Telstra 3G phone and use that as a modem instead?

Wireless in the form that there is no wired connection to the internet, silly. Contact bigpond to see if any of the routers they provide have USB-in on them, otherwise I think you may need a gateway box to get it up and running. Keep an eye out for the NextG wireless solutions coming up. There may be an ethernet solution included in the next run of products, and you should be able to upgrade for free (I can't speak for Bigpond's policies, just Telstra Mobile's, but its worth a shot).

Old, cheap computer. Doesn't need a screen or keyboard except for the inital setup. You plug the USB modem into it, and then run an ethernet cable from the computer to the airport express. Sit the box in a cupboard or corner somewhere and just leave it to tick over. A $200 second-hand windows PC can do the job.
