The fan in my macbook pro had been really loud and sounded like it was dying and then thismorning it finally died.
So my 7 week old macbook pro will be going to my local apple store to get fixed.
I talked to them over the phone and apparently they will replace the entire logic board for a fan failure.
Seems a bit over the top to me but im not complaing if i get a newer revision board with hopefully less thermal grease so it runs a bit cooler

This is not a rant about the fact the fan failed.I just found it interesting they may replace a logic board that costs something like $1000 when a cheap fan has failed.

Is it just me, or does every problem with a Mac, when taken to an Apple re-seller, get "fixed" by replacing the dreaded logic board?

Edit: Sorry that this is off-topic, but is iSlayer a full-time admin now?

well in a notebook everything is on the logic board so they usually have no choice but to replace it

Maybe the fan is attached to it aswell.i dont know.im sure someone like macmate might be able to give us an answer

I have a mate in China with the same fan issue... from the day he got it, it's been a problem. Dont think he has been able to get it fixed just yet, but I bet when it dies completely he will have no choice.

i checked the temp of the cpu in mine after the fan failed and it was 94Ί so if the fan fails its a major issue.
Apple should replace any fan that is faulty even if it still works as its a huge problem and if the fan fails like mine did its just a matter of time till the cpu's and logic board fry and the hard drive wouldnt appreciate the ambient heat either

Im still using the system now on a glass desk and its running at 56Ί without a fan which is fine.i dont think the fan is normally on at 56Ί anyway so im not worried

Does anyone know how many fans are in a macbook pro ?
There is definatly one still running in mine but its at very low speed and never gets any faster no matter how hot it gets

Can you describe what a dying fan sounds like?
Mine has been pretty loud lately and the laptop has been very hot. Even when idle.

A fellow at work here is having bad fan noise now... and you can hear it.. its like the bearings are stuffed up. And he is not looking happy about taking the machine into to be repaired and thus be without it.

Apple build quality for these machines is looking pretty below average.

My cpu was sitting on 77c yesterday afternoon whilst doing some light websurfing via wireless on my lap. Firefox was the only program open etc.
