I found this site: Macbook HD's

If you upgraded your Macbook hard drive do you need to format the drive to work with Mac OSX? Or do you install it & it just works?

I was particularly looking at the Western Digital one as I'm not sure if the 7200rpm HD's will cause the Macbook heat problems. Also is 120GB the maximum the Macbook could handle?

What brand is the Hard drive in the Macbook, does it matter which brands you buy & is the original HD only compatiable with Mac's?

Yes you will have to format the drive. The installer should do this for you, so there's nothing special you need to do when putting OS X on the new drive. Just install the drive, and boot from the CD and away you go.

The macbook could take more than 120GB... but that is currently the largest laptop hard drive available.

No idea on the brand Apple uses for their hard drives. But any SATA 2.5" drive should work. Vice versa the drive that comes with the Macbook should work in any other device that takes a SATA 2.5" drive.

From what I've seen the standard HDD is a Toshiba - I was thinking of going with a Samsung 120gb because apparently they're abit quieter.
