Last night i picked up my new 17" MacBook Pro. I have only had a quick play with it but i'll give you my first impressions anyway. Apple know how to do everything with style! The box & packaging are almost as styling as what's inside the box.....almost

I have seen heaps of pics from all around the world just like mine. People opening their new 15" MBP, seeing the cool looking inner packaging etc. Nothing comes close to opening your own and seeing your own. That last statment my sound a little weird but there is nothing i like more than opening any new bit of Hi-Fi, Computer or Gadget. :P The MBP was in perfect condition, no marks, prints or dents on the case or screen. This is my first Apple laptop and the first thing i noticed was the weight. It is almost 1/3 light than my last Dell laptop. Easy enough to pickup and move around with one hand without any wrist strain for myself & my wife. The next thing was the depth, it's SO thin and sleek.

I'll start with a few issues i have with it. Mind you, they are minor compaired to all the good points iv'e noticed. Firstly, the screen is about 15 to 20% less bright than my Intel iMac. It still looks very nice but not as vivid. Secondly, iv'e nothiced while moving it around that the screen/lid can fall closed a little easy. Finally, my biggest issue is that the drivers for BOOT CAMP will not install. Others have also had this issue. I'm sure it will be resolved shortly.

The GOOD points..... In no order.

The backlit keyboard is much brighter than the older powerbook and looks amazing in a dark room. I have already mentioned how great the size and weight is. To add to that though, i think if anyone out there is considering a 15" MBP because you think the 17" version is too big and heavy, you would be wrong It's not much bigger at all and is only slightly heavier, but you get a MUCH nicer screen. Firewire 800 ROCKS! Thanks to Decryption we got to try firewire 800 in all it's glory. To give you an idea of its speed it took under 10 mins to transfer a 28gb file! The speakers were quite impressive for a laptop. Not much bass of course but a nice crisp & clear sound with plenty of volume to spare. Final Cut Pro universal runs at a blistering speed indeed! I am very impressed with the performance with such CPU/Memory intensive programs. I was also able to burn DVDs at full speed with a few different brands, unlike the iMac. One of my fav things though is the "right click" 2 finger on the trackpad option!

I will have more info as time goes on...... enjoy the pix

How does the right click work? I assume that there is software that detects when two fingers are on the track pad, and momentarely switchs the mosue button to right click?

That is correct. In mouse options you can select it on or off.
