 Best approach for dead RAM?

I have a 15.4" PowerBook with 1.5Gb RAM (the original 512Mb plus a 1Gb). The 512Mb has died this week, after causing several days of high-temp running and freeze-ups before I did a diagnostic and found it. I've removed the DIMM so I can continue to work.

This machine was only purchased (Domayne Canberra) in late November, so it's definitely a warranty job. I'd just like some advice as to best approach. Should I just return the DIMM for a replacement? Will I need to put it back in the PowerBook and take the whole thing in? Should I write it off given the inevitable run-around I'm going to get (at least, that's what I predict) and buy another DIMM?

Any and all advice greatly appreciated.

You can call Domayne and ask them how they'd handle the issue. You also have the option of going to another authorised repair agent such as Mac1 at ANU.

A good Authorised Apple Repair Centre will just take the Powerbook, replace the RAM on the spot and you'll be on your merry way.

Don't ask about the bad ones. Just avoid them.

Thanks for the advice. I've called Domayne here in Canberra and they've asked me to bring the whole thing in. Which I can do. Weekend, or maybe tomorrow arvo.

If they do the right thing and just replace the RAM, I'll be very happy. I'll post the outcome here.

All RAM I've purchased from an Apple store has come with a "lifetime warranty", in other words, if they have it in stock, they should replace it without any hassles.

Good luck anyhow!

Latest info is that it appears not to be the RAM but the motherboard. The guys at Mac1 here in Canberra have it at the moment for a motherboard replacement.

Apparently they have had a number (unspecified) with dodgy RAM slots.

They reckon it could be 2-3 days.

I was just about to say - the reason they will ask for the whole machine, is in case it is a dodgy ram slot, which appears to happen a lot in the later powerbooks - it happend in my dad's 17" powerbook, I knew after I put the ram in mine and it was fine, then put my ram in his and it was still saying 'error error' etc!

Your powerbook is common, so the wait time should be min. I'd hate to go in with an issue with a new macbook, you could waiting a while as parts would still be outstanding!

Got my PowerBook back today. They replaced the main board. All working hunky-dory.

Strangely, or maybe not so, my machine apparently has no serial number now...

PS - Hawker, just wait 'til you see the last two episodes of NCIS for this year! Finished watching the season tonight.

This is normal and will remain like so for the rest of its life. It always happens with a logic board change, and unfortunately apple has no procedure to put the serial you had back onto this new logic board. You'll just have to ignore it and put up with it I am afraid.
