My iBook (G3 600 late 2001) died a few months ago with an apparent logic board failure. My question is there any fuses in these models. The iBook was asleep plugged in when it died but the battery (almost new) was fully discharged when I discovered it's demise despite being on the power supply. I recall having my PB 165c repaired with a replacement power supply fuse many years ago when it did something similar so I'm hoping for a similar result.

Current iBook symptoms; no chime at all, only response is a faint twitch in the combo drive when you press the power button. tried the key combos to reset the power management, zap PRAM etc and have pressed the rest button for 30 secs all with no change.

I know it's a long shot but is there any hope?

There are numerous ceramic fuses located on an iBook motherboard; none of which are particularly relevant to repairing the logic board's power circuitry. Of interest on the iBook 600 motherboard is the DC board located where you plug in the AC adapter, these can commonly die in iBooks and are replacable.

The motherboard of a PB165C of course much more basic compared to an iBooks - when you refer to the fuse, was it one in the power adaptor of the notebook itself?

Questions:

- Does your iBook have a charged battery, of can you try another one if your existing one is dead? Does your power adaptor work?

- Have you tried unplugging the battery and leaving it for ~ 24 hours; this will ensure that the PRAM and power management backup battery are completely reset.

- Try removing RAM from the expansion slot. Faulty RAM can make a Mac not boot at all.

JB, thanks for the advice.

No I don't have a charged battery although I do have the original battery with some charge but that does nothing different. The power adapter was replaced (a 3rd party one specifically for iBooks) a few weeks before the iBook died and still appears to be OK (the light on the brick comes on).

I will try leaving it for 24 hours unplugged with no battery.

I have removed the RAM with no change and have also removed a new hard disc in case it was drawing too much power, still no change.
