I'm waiting.
i figure my powerbook can hold out until mid to late next year. Then I get rid of it and my thinkpad and like others have said have an all-in-one mac and windows machine.
I'm thinking Apple will release new designed powerbooks for it, and my only hope is that they look as sharp as the albooks, but then again this Jonathon Ive designing them, so I bet they'll look even better.
Can't wait for them.

This is one of the biggest changes in the history of Apple, so a new exterior design to reflect the new interior is certain. Well... as certain as anyone can be at this point. And yeah, I agree OM... the current PBs are very sexy but I have every bit of faith in Mr Ive

I'm with the_OM and a few others around here, I'm holding out. My 12" is just over a year old now, so I'm thinking I'll wait until the Intel PowerBooks's next year and grab one of those.
I need a few Windows apps, so it will be awesome to have dual boot capabilities and all that. Plus, if the current design is anything to go by, the next one's should look awesome.
I've even opened a 'New PowerBook' savings account and started putting money into it. I can't wait, they're going to be awesome.

I have a 1Ghz 15" Albook, and after spending 3 weeks in Japan using it instead of a G5, I understand the feeling. What made a lot of difference though was swapping the original 4200rpm HD for a 7200rpm one. I gather, however, that the latest 120Gb 5400rpm drives, because of the much higher platter density, are very quick.
While I hold out for a Powerbook with 2x dual-core 2.5Ghz processors and 6 hour battery life, I'm thinking of going for one of the 120Gb hd's, as it's the biggest bottleneck of the system, beyond getting 2x 1GB RAM (was cheap in Japan and very tempting).

I had just ordered my imac when the intel announcement came out. I briefly considered cancelling and waiting another year, but then realised that it was most defintely time to upgrade, as the ol' 'book no longer could cope.
And I would snap up a 12" G4 ibook if the price was cheap enough.
(looks like my ideal setup would be similar to mwot's)

I'm going to wait until the mactels come out and everyone wants the latest and greatest, and then I'll buy myself the best runout G5 I can afford. I'm not interested in doing beta-testing for Apple. I think by 2008 it would be safe to use an Intel Mac without any problems.

My rental Powerbook will hit 18 months old in June next year, which is apparently a good baseline to start considering an update to the rental. I might skip the first gen releases, and maybe look at a powermac around October-November.

You might be surprised how stable Leopard is right out of the gate. Remember, Apple has been secretly developing the OS X universal binary in parallel with the PPC-native version.

Yeah, for me 2007 ia likely to be the PB upgrade. Intel inside should hopefully give me dual boot which would give me the best of both worlds. Worth the wait I feel.

I am certainly holding out for the Mactel computers next year, am currently a windows user at home (although swing both ways at work!), and I am sick to death of Win XP and its slowness.
I think Apple will change the look of their machines with the move to intel processors, stands to reason that with such a major shift they would want them to stand out.
My wish list for a new powerbook would be: - Clear/glass like cases or cases not unlike iPod Nano black
- SED displays replacing LCDs (see:
SED Displays on show in Paris.)
- User upgradable video cards (Nvidia has already developed these!)
- Better quality speakers, less tinny
- Much larger h/disks
- Higher resolution screens
- Blu-ray drive
- >1GB memory
- Swappable drive bays like on Thinkpads, allowing us to upgrade our drives to something newer

I am half betting that when Apple does release these Mactels that the Intel version of Mac OS X will include WINE (WINdows Emulator) as seen on Linux, or Rosetta doing the same thing.

Of course it depends on money, but I think my next computer purchase will be a revision 2 Mactel PowerBook. At least, that's what I'm planning on. I guess it depends where I end up studying next year, too
