Default Disk Utility RAID woes

Hey all,

about 2 months ago i put 2x 1tb HD's in a dual bay USB 2.0 external drive enclosure. I set them up as a mirrored RAID array using disk utility.

it has been working flawlessly since i set it up , however i believe there has been a miss alignment with data or something because disk utility is reporting a "degraded" RAID. however if i take out each drive and test them separately they work perfectly.

my question is:
in disk utility there is an option to "rebuild" the RAID but it says that rebuilding will delete all the data on the raid slice, does that mean it will reformat both disks and rebuild? or will it format , and re-mirror the degraded drive so all the data is not lost??

also if someone has a better way to do this, it will be much appreciated.

thanks,
~Ray

EDIT:
also, i noticed that i didnt check "automatically rebuild" when creating the RAID, is there anyway to alter that??? maybe someone good in terminal can help?
