Default INTERNET CONNECTION WITH G4 USING LEOPARD

Please help - I've recently upgraded to Leopard from Tiger
and am using a G4 mirror door. The USB speedtouch modem
I was using no longer seems to be compatible with leopard : (

So I'm thinking of buying an 'original' airport card so I can connect
to my dads wireless router. Does anyone know if the 'original' airport
card is compatible with leopard?

Any info would be much appreciated.

Welcome applebobbin

Nearly every MDD (mirror drive door) model can take an original Airport card, and is compatible with Leopard. The exception to the rule is the firewire 800 MDD (dual 1.25) that takes an Airport Extreme card.

Original Airport = 802.11b speeds (11mpbs)
Airport Extreme = 802.11g speeds (54 mbps)

... if you're just using it to access the internet, then either card will be more than fast enough in terms of throughput.

Original AirPort cards can get expensive. Also, wifi is not good for consistent connections, especially when there is more than one wifi device trying to connect.

The cheapest and most reliable option is to use a NetComm or Panasonic HomePlug Start Kit (the Netcomm NB285 twin-pack can be found for A$125) that lets you piggyback an ethernet connection over the house mains wiring.

The good thing is that there is absolutely no drivers needed, and will work with any OS.

Not these days - you can pickup the cards for under $50. The past prices were highly inflated (it was eBay's fault!)

Another possibility is to get a USB2.0 card and a USB 802.11n dongle. More expensive than the original Airport card, but a fair bit faster.

As Byrd has mentioned, you can pick up original Airport cards for reasonable money. I bought one off this site not too long ago for around $50.
