Looking for a External HD that is not powered because I want to be able to just pop over to mates places and collect stuff without taking my current 1TB HD along with all the power cables and crap..whats a good band at a good price? and is there any non powered ones that are 1TB?

Only 2.5" drives can be run from USB-based power. The maximum is, I believe, 500 GB, but they are hellishly expensive.

You could put a 2.5 inch bare 500G 5400 RPM Drive (WD, Fujitsu or Samsung for example) and a Vantec USB only case together for just under $200. But it would either need its power brick or use the dual USB lead to be sure it gets enough juice and doesn't drop in and out. The other option is to use a more expensive firewire case, say $50 extra and it won't need a power brick, but of course the machines you are connecting to need to have firewire !

LaCie make a 1TB portable drive. I don't know if it can draw power from USB, but they work well on Firewire. Note, it's 2x2.5" drives, so yeah pretty pricey. I have a 500Gb model and it was ~$500

RRP for the 1TB is $799 according to LaCie.

I had been looking at the LaCie rugged 500Gb with Firewire 800/400 plus usb as well, released May last year. I want to avoid USB for video transfer as I have had experience with corrupt/dropouts via the usb method. I think they sell now for around $359 at the Apple Store. My birthday is coming up.....hint hint.
