Time Machine over Airport Extreme (Airdisk) isn't supported out of the box.
I think someone (could have been Reubania) wrote up a step by step guide on how to get this working about 8 months ago (I think). Last edited by leon; 2nd April 2009 at 05:02 PM. |

I've actually found it how to do it and, yes, it is supported out of the box.
I just needed to setup the Finder Preferences and, under the tab "Show these items on the Desktop", click on Connected Servers. Then, under the tab "Show these items on the Sidebar" I clicked on Computer. Now I only need to go to Go / Network and the external HD appears on my desktop! Yeah! ![]() Hope it can be usefull to someone else...

How have you gone with your setup so far?
I've found that since the last Airport firmware update the connection to my HD (plugged into my Airport Extreme) keeps dropping out. Any troubles for you so far?

Yes leon, it was I who wrote up the lengthy setup steps. Check it out if you have technical difficulties, but here is a simple lowdown on connecting an external HDD to the Extreme and having TM work on it.
1. Make sure the external HDD is formatted properly (Mac OS Extended Journaled) 2. IF partitioned, make sure it is GUID (Partitioned Map Scheme) and not the default, Master Boot Record 3. Connect the external HDD DIRECTLY to your Mac 4. RUN TM backup and select the mounted external HDD on your Mac 5. Wait for it to initialise 6. After a few minutes, stop it and eject the external HDD 7. Connect external HDD to AEBS and wait for your Mac to recognise it 8. To be sure, try accessing the external HDD in Finder on your Mac 9. Run TM preferences and select the external HDD that should now be recognised through AEBS 10. Resume TM backup and don't touch a thing! Hopefully it should continue to run smoothly and work like TC. My issue revolves around AEBS not recognising the external HDDs it was connected to. You can read it all in this thread

Hi there,
I've followed your instructions properly, and I can back up my files only with my hdd connected directly to my mac, not when connected to Airport Extreme. When connected through Extreme, i get told that the Hdd is not the right format (journaled) .. when it is. Do you know why this could be? I really dont want to have it plugged in directly all the time. Thats why i got my extreme. Thanks
