Default Time Machine Using Airport Extreme & Portable Hard Drive Question?

Probably a stupid question but just wondered if anyone knew whether using Time Machine to back up wirelessly through an Airport Extreme with a portable hard drive attached would use up any of my monthly internet allowance through my ISP?

Over the past month and a half my internet usage has increased dramatically...

I'm with bigpond on a 12gb plan and I used it up last month for the first time in over 3 years, and i've already used 5gb so far this month with 20 days to go...
I usually average 5-8gb per month.

This seems to coincide with me setting up time machine but I don't know if it's a coincidence or not? My understanding was that they just used the network to talk to each other???

Looking at the usage meter on bigpond's website, it seems to be my "Upload Usage" that has increased alot compared to previous months. Could something else be causing this? what counts towards "Uploads"?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

It should not use your upload bandwidth - make sure you don't have a Bit Torrent application running in the background.

Thanks Lutze,
I've never used a bit torrent application.

The only other thing I can think of that would be using uploads is mobile me, didn't think it would need to upload that much data though?
