Default Network-attached storage & Wester DIgital

Hi guys,

do you know if Wester digital prices and performances are competitive compared to other companies?

I'm thinking of buying this:
WD ShareSpace 2 TB Hard Drives ( WDA4NC20000 )

And what about using it on a WiFi Network too?

Would they also work as multimedia devices, for example connected to a TV?

Cheers!!!

Ohhh by the way, I found a very good price ($799) at:
http://www.shopbot.com.au/default.as...osition=search
Usually is sold for $1500...
.

if you can stretch, go for the 4TB version as it has Raid5 (3tb of storage space, but if one disk dies data is still safe) where as the 2tb model is only available in stripe (one disk dies, everything dies) and mirrior (both disks identical, you only get 1tb of space)

Ohhh definetely cannot stretch that much now... I've to save for a MacBook or iMac!
I think I'm fine using the mirror system, so I'm sure that if 1 disk dies the other is fine and I'm ok with 1TB. And then when more money will come in then I'll buy more discs... :P

The buffalo linkstation quad is what you want if you want media sharing capability as well:
ht.com.au | Buffalo LinkStation Quad - NAS - 4 TB - Serial ATA-150 - HD 1 TB x 4 - RAID 0, 1, 5, 10, JBOD - Gigabit Ethernet

not only is it cheaper, it also actas as a torrent downloader if you want it to.

There are cheaper versions if you don't need something with space for 4 drives.

I'm actually looking for a very reliable machine, not a cheaper one... I'm sick of my LaCie 1TB drive nor working properly.
I want some serious stuff now... and because I'm looking to be expandable in future I guess the WA is a good choice.
But hey, I'm open to discuss it, that's why my post here!

We got the 2TB Sharespace at work and bought another two HDDs seperately to put in that worked out cheaper. Be aware that the device only takes WD drives!!! We put in some samsungs and it detected them but wouldn't let us use them! Bastards

Otherwise we reckon it's a great little box. We use it as our software share, temp backup, iTunes server, etc.
