USB Speedstream Modem + Leopard?

I'm trying to set up someone's internet connection, getting help over said internet. The modem works fine via Ethernet but Ubuntu 6.10 is refusing to connect to the internet outside the modem's interface. Unfortunately the safest way to connect the computer to the modem would seem to be via the modem's sole ethernet port.

Is there any way I can get Leopard to use the USB port or shall I just keep switching this ethernet cable back and forth?

From memory those modems only allow one connection regardless of which interface is used. It's not meant to have a switch in it - so it's one or the other.
