Internet providers
I am moving to Australia in July to study at UTS. The housing facility told me that students should fix their own internet connection, but internet plans in Australia are very different from the plans I have at home (the Netherlands).
I download a lot because I do a lot with digital video. I noticed that most plans have datalimits. I am searching for a reliable provider with decent speeds and unlimited data (or a big limit).
The University recommends to get wireless broadband, but I don't know that much about this form of broadband.
Could you guys recommend some plans and explain how your world of broadband works?
Thanks!

Plan Search - Broadband Choice
Go nuts.
And if you want unlimited data (keep dreaming!) or a very big limit, be prepared to pay lots of money for it, especially for wireless.

Considering virtually all ISPs in Australia enforce monthly download (and in some cases, upload) quotas with shaping, and that 80% of all traffic consumed comes via transoceanic cable at A$1.60 per GB (average) ... we do okay. Have a read of this article to see why Australian internet is the way it is.
You're moving from the most internet-liberal country on the planet to one of the most restrictive -- you'll just have to get used to being mindful of what you download. A$60 will get you 25 GB worth of traffic, on average.
Oh, and don't think you'll be able to freeload off the University networks either, if anything they are even more draconian.

Only if you like the idea of paying $60 a month for about 3 GB of traffic and 22 cents per megabyte thereafter.

Internode are the only ISP I recommend: Internode - high quality, very reliable, excellent support. It does cost a little more than other ISPs, but its' worth it

I recommend exetel, their plans are quite nice, and their live support rocks to boot.

I used to be with Exetel until I moved to Newcastle from the Sunshine Coast, and found that they didn't have any ports available at my exchange.
I have now gone with Internode, and so far have been extremely impressed with both their customer service reps and their broadband service.
I was quoted 7-10 days for a new connection, but was connected inside 24 hours.
Highly recommend them to anyone who will listen now.
