South Australian Police Caught Pirating Movies

Now here's something interesting:

Quote:
According to The Australian, during an audit of computer systems by the South Australian police force’s IT branch, police computers belonging to hundreds of police officers were found to contain movies.

The origin of these movies is not clear, but it is probable that they’ve been downloaded via p2p at some point, either on these systems, or on the personal systems of officers and transferred over.

This is along the same vein as the recent child porn bust where a Federal Police officer and other state police officers were arrested.

That's not very surprising, especially if it's office droids.

Most un-tech savvy people download music (mp3z) and don't think that there is anything wrong, nor illegal about obtaining music in this way.

The movies are on their WORK computers if you read the quote.

That's the problem... (apart from the copyright stuff as well).

And it says, although they might of not used work computers to download the content, clearly it has ended up on the work computers.

Chances are it was downloaded on personal computers at home and then brought into work.

I know a heap of police officers that download pirated movies. So they'd have a hard time arresting people for it, police your own before policing us.

The only arrests I agree in are those of people attempting to make money out of it, ie buying a dvd (downloading a copy) and making copies to sell on - and these are the arrests the police are making!

Yeah, so far I have not heard of an arrest in Australia just because someone had possession of non-purchased copyright music or video.

Technically it is even illegal to record a copyrighted program that is being shown on free-to-air - which I think nobody can say they have never recorded such a program.

Wonder if the SA Police have pirated copies of Underbelly.

Oh wait a minute, they didn't need to, it's us poor sobs in Vic that aren't allow to watch it legally!

Actually that law changed, you can now record anything on FTA, they finally got rid of the stupid rules that they never enforced.

As for music piracy, it all depends on what stuff the industry are up to at the time, the police don't do investigations on that, the industry themself do and only go for big groups of people at once.

Are you sure?

I thought that tradiational Aussie laws were that we could tape stuff of the telly (for private use only)... however when we (fn Johnny) signed into the Free Trade Agreement, our copyright laws had to change, and that loophole was closed...???

I believe it's still true: you can record free to air TV and watch it once for personal use, then it must be deleted.
