eBay: PayPal or COD only effective 17/06/08

Just got this email from eBay:

Quote:
Because you are a valued seller we'd like to let you know about some changes to eBay.com.au that are going to make our marketplace an even safer place for you to buy and sell.
These changes will be introduced in two stages:
From 21 May you must offer PayPal on all your listings as well as currently permitted payment methods.
From 17 June you will only be able to offer PayPal on your listings and pay on pick up (i.e.paid for when picking up the item).
Pay on pick up can only be offered in conjunction with PayPal. No other payment methods will be permitted.
This means no money orders, no personal cheques, no bank deposits (although how they intend to police that is another question).

I wonder if requiring PayPal like this is even legal - it's certainly not ethical, given that PayPal is a wholly owned subsidiary of eBay.

Thoughts?

Personally, I much prefer PayPal - I quite like it.
But ethical, hmmm.
Interesting how they're doing it for eBay AU, have they done it elsewhere?

Safer? What rot. It's just a way for eBay to get more transaction fees per auction.

However, I expect that eBay can put any terms and conditions that they want on to anyone who transacts using their system. It's their system and I expect that you do the eBay equivalent of signing your rights away if you choose to sell on it.

And it will be easy enough for them to 'enforce', possibly by suspending the accounts of sellers who don't use PayPal to collect amounts post auction.

As far as I can see, this is just another reason to not use eBay.

Are you sure it means that?

Still it seems all crapola.

I wonder if this is in response to the Today Tonight segment?

So, I guess I'll be using the "Cash On Delivery" payment method then, with the "Cash" deposited to my bank account....

I hate that the seller has to incur a fee to *receive* money, but the person paying you doesn't have to pay anything at all. I'm really turned off eBay now - I had a thread a few months ago about them removing the ability for sellers to leave negative feedback.

As a buyer I'm happy with that. The only problems I've had have been on transactions by direct deposit. I had one bad transaction on PayPal and it was resolved much more easily.

As a seller... well, shipping prices just increased by '1.1 to 2.4'%

ebay is so crap now... I'd sooner sell my items here, or on OCAU.

Wow... That's shocking! I know I haven't sold a lot of stuff on eBay before... had a bit of a go at it earlier this year, mostly my fiancιe's crap and some baby clothes, but each and every time we used bank deposit, which was easy for me to check because Suncorp update payments immediately (unlike say, Cbank which wait til that night...)

Tell me if I'm wrong, but wont this add 24-48 hours on every transaction? PayPal is not instantaneous, yes?

And, as suggested - prices on eBay will now inflate artificially - at least for those sellers that have a clue about business transacting.

Sheesh. That big box of bits and pieces sitting by my desk may just have to keep sitting there...

This is a brilliant Idea, saves everyone a hell of a lot of hassle AND shows that eBay is cracking down on scams.

I don't think it says that Paypal is the only way they will let you pay when using the site, I think it is saying that you must offer it as an option (amongst the other usual options). I'll have to visit the site to check that though....
